Quote: I know that camera has own flash sync speed for external flash gun, of lets say 1/250 sec or 1/300 sec.
Now, if I set the shutter speed on my 40D or say 1/1000 sec, is it still possible to use flash gun? How?
Ta.
Yes if you like a cut off picture. (showing curtain}
isnt there a high speed flash sync for cannon flashes.
button looks light a flash lightening sysmbol with a H next to it.
Hi Cole,
It is possible if your flashgun has a High Speed Sync mode. This will allow you to shoot at any shutter speed, although as your shutter speeds get higher, so the flashgun's range diminishes. The use of a flash extender helps somewhat in this regard.
Canon's 550EX and 580EX (to name a couple) have a High Speed Sync mode.
I find High Speed Sync invaluable, particularly for using fill in flash in bright conditions, and sold my older (but superb) Metz flashgun to change to a flash that had this mode (Canon 580EX).
Justin.
Don't know if this helps Cole but on the Nikons, if you islolate one particular pin (forget which one at present - I'm at work), the camera and gun will synch up to 1/8000th. It may well be that the Canons have something similar..??
Quote: The basic facts are, if you use a high speed shutter the flash has to be such a short duration it is almost useless
Have you pointed out these "basic facts" to the camera manufacturers who've took the time and trouble to develop and implement these features to save them wasting their time?
Quote: ........... almost useless.
= not useless, it does have some use, you just need to be aware of how it works and what that means. bit like everything else in life ![]()

I quote METZ. This flash mode permits flash shots to be taken at shutter speeds faster than the flash sync speed which is expedient for portraiture IN A VERY BRIGHT AMBIENT LIGHT WHEN THE DOF IS TO BE LIMITEDBY A WIDE APERTURE OPENING.(eg f2) In other words a very weak flash.

Can confirm Mike, My D200 & SB800 will sync all the way to 1/8000's, Without any modifications to the pins......![]()
Having said that the flash duration drops of a bit from 1/5000's upwards.....But you don't have any problems with the curtain halfway across the frame.....!
It's not a feature I find a whole lot of use for though. ![]()
