Seriously though, been picking up a few bad vibes lately about using flash but used correctly it is quite inspiring... and useful..

Having sat through an evening of not so good flash lit insect photographs, its evil and the work of the devil. :-0

To be fair I saw a link to a Wedding photographer who uses a mix of flash and ambient light to create beautiful results, so used well it is a bonus and creative tool.

Having seen some clever use of multiple lights it strike me as an area that when used with restraint it can work well.

But Moths and Butterflies against pitch black backgrounds or dimly lit vegitation, no.

Direct flash is often a dirty word though sometimes there is no option. Wireless off camera flash, bounced flash, gelled flash now that's a different ball game!

Almost all of my flash use is for fill in different types of nature photography. Like any accessory though, as you say, the key is used correctly. When I was using Nikon, I nearly always used the built-in diffuser, and now with Olympus I use an Omni Bounce, but again, as a diffuser. I am in the process of building up a Canon FD system, which is manual focus, but exposure is Auto. Unfortunately, I purchased a dedicated Canon flash for my T70's, and it looks good, but doesn't work. I considered a ring flash, but I don't like the highlight they leave in the eyes, it's the shape of the flash, and doesn't look natural enough, so I'm still shopping. I'll get something by the time the bugs thaw out in the spring. With direct flash, or as I understand it, the flash as the main light source, the key according to John Shaw, is to learn to use the ambient light correctly as the fill.

Fill-in flash is an occasionally useful technique but some photographers are addicted to it. Indoors, outdoors, dull weather, bright weather, flash flash flash. Used indiscriminately it can make photographs look horribly artificial. Sometimes ambient is best.

If fill is used as fill, it shouldn't be readily apparent. I use it a lot to put highlights in the eye/s of wildlife, or to brighten shadows in vegetation. I almost never use flash as the primary light source, I just don't like the results. I guess I need more practise. I guess you have a choice of fill with the flash, or on the PC.

Saviour of the universe is what I heard.

I have not really used a flash until recently and I have to say it was fun. I don't really know how to use it but I do always carry it now. Something I will be experimenting with I think

So I heard from the local constabulary Wink

The secret is in using it properly, not blasting the subject with light so that the flash is as Jas woud perharps muse "blindingly obvious".

Isn't it about now that someone needs to pop up and link to Strobist and Planet Neil?

I think Joe McNallys photos alone make the case for flash:

Which is what I mean about artificiality - the shot of the guy by the river looks like a poor composite of two entirely different photographs.
