    Morning all,

So a while back I was lucky enough to do fairly well in the Wanderlust Travel Photography competition, and won £800 worth of Nikon gear (as valued RRP on their website)

Slight problem, and one you'd think they'd have considered - since I am a working photographer, and one that shoot Canon in any case, I have no need of £800 of Nikon gear.

Consequently for anyone considering buying something Nikon, I was wondering if you'd like to do me a favour - basically go to the link as highlighted in the email below, and if you want something on there, let me know. I don't expect you to pay full price as listed on the site since most retailers undercut that by a fair way, but I'll accept whatever it'd cost say from Jessops or another online retailer, within reason.

Otherwise, I'm just going to order a kit set-up and try and sell it, but figured I'd come on here and see if anyone might help me out and want something in the meantime - ideally something as close to the £800 as possible!!

Hope that's all clear... email below:

    Dear James,

Congratulations on winning with Wanderlust Travel Photographer of the Year in association with Nikon!
As a winner you get to choose your Nikon prize up to the value of £800.

Based on our current product range we would recommend the award-winning D5000 18-55 VR Kit. This incredibly easy to use, entry-level DSLR comes with a vari-angle LCD screen and delivers superb still images and high-definition D-movie clips with sound and comes with the 18-55mm VR kit lens. You can find more information about our entire range, in addition to the price list here: www.nikon.co.uk (price list found under Services and Support)

To get your hands on your new prize, please email me with your choice up to the value of £800 by the 15th June 2010 and I will organise for this to be delivered to you. (Prizes cannot be distributed to winners responding after this date).

Congratulations for winning the competition - though why enter if you didn't want the prize? (why should they consider it?)

Hi James, well done for winning but wont people if they are going to pay Jessops prices go straight to Jessops etc as opposed to through you. You might have to temp people to make it worth their while. Grin

Agree with both of the above comments....

1 - Why enter a competition you dont want the prize from? it was down to you to look at the prize, not for them to be 'considerate' towards your choice of prize...

    and

2 - Even though the gear would be 'new'... if i was paying new prices i would want all the benifits of buying from a shop. You would need to be looking at somewhere in the middle of second hand, v's new prices for me to be interested.

    Congratulations on winning though. Smile

All that gear and not a warranty in sight.........congratulations on the win though.

Personally somebody gives you the opportunity to throw all that duff canon stuff away and replace it with the 'award-winning D5000 18-55 VR Kit'... and you're STILL not satisfied ;o)

    Congrats anyway!

Surely you would need to offer someone an incentive to go down that route. If you offered someone £800 worth of kit for a reduced price, if they saved £200, at least it would be worth there while. I can't see anyone doing it otherwise, unless it was a close friend wanting to do you a favour.
I think £600 for £800 worth of kit is a fair price. It's a little more than you would get if you received the prize and re-sold it.

The truth of the matter is that the Nikon rrp is way beyond the real world price, so you'll have to adjust value quite a bit. The fact that they suggest the D5000 with 18-55 VR kit for £800 should be compared against Camera Price Buster where it can be had for £470, although there is some misguided soul listing it at £759!

    Hi All,

It's a long story with the prize and the reason, but basically I entered the Professional Portfolio category, where the top prize was £5000, and there was no mention of any second place prizes, and certainly not Nikon gear. The judges decided that the standard wasn't high enough, though my submission was the best of what there was, and therefore opted not to give the top prize but instead award a "highly commended" along with this prize, which, since the contest was sponsored by Nikon, meant that they didn't have to fork out for it.

I do wonder whether they didn't receive enough entries to cover the £5k prize (entry fee £25) and were therefore set to lose out financially, not a great thing to happen at this time, especially since the judges were VERY shady in giving their opinions to me afterwards, among other things such as the photo they felt let the portfolio down being mis-printed in every situation they have used it since (It was a panoramic image that has been cropped to 3x2 everytime they have used it, destroying its impact)

You're all right of course, an incentive would be useful. The gear will (or should) all have a warranty with it as it is direct from Nikon (!)

How about we say I'll match the cheapest price you can find on the internet, within reason (i.e. no eBay/Amazon used) -5%

So if WarehouseExpress have it for £500, I'll do it for £475.

Other then that, it's just doing me a favour I guess! If no-one is up for it I'll buy the most expensive kit the have and try and sell it on, but if someone has anything in mind, it'd be useful to me.

    Cheers

    J

    A decent prize!

I'm very surprised that's legal!! It doesn't put Nikon in a very good light!

'So if WarehouseExpress have it for £500, I'll do it for £475'.

Nope still not making me even come anywhere near considering it. I think you are miles out and you might be better off buying some popular kit and selling it, but either way I think you will have to seriously reconsider your expectations.

Congratulations on the win James Grin

When you entered did you (Wade) read through the T&C's ? as more than likely it would have held a clause re the "standards of entries". If there isn't such a clause (and since you paid the entrance fee in good faith) then the legality of the judges amending the prize awarded is questionable to say the least.

Check your copy of the entry for for the T&C's

    Once again well Done.
