I am thinking of buying a "bridge"camera to
carry around for those opportune pics
when I don't have the Canon 20D kit handy.

Anybody tried the Fujifilm Finepix S6500
or new S9600 and can comment which is best
    between the two.

I hope you don't mind a reply that is not quite specific to the two cameras you mention as options; but my father uses the S9500. It actually isn't all that compact when compared to an SLR and he is now considering a 400D (or similar) with a 18-200 zoom on. There's not that much (if any) difference is size between that and a bridge type camera, and you maintain the SLR 'quality'.

Again, apologies it's not specific to the two you mention but some food for thought maybe?

i'd think again, i dont rate the image quality of the s9500/s9600, i havent got samples from the 6500.

I bought a sony H1 before i bought a 350d and the images are very pleasing, plus the camera is compact
