If anyone has Firefox you don't have to have a seperate tab open with the gmail site in to keep an eye on incoming mail - there is an extension that sits in the bottom of the browser bar and checks every 5 mins (default - it can be set to what ever length of time you want) to see if you have new mail.
If you do have new mail, a small notice bar slides out of the bottom of the browser telling you you have messages (there is an option to play a sound too).
To read them you just click the little Red "M" icon and it loads the gmail site in a seperate tab for you (can also be changed to open in current window or new seperate one).
It's a fantastic extension - give it a whirl : GMail Notifier Extension download page
P.S : I have 2 GMail invites if anyone is still after one. Send your First Name, Surname and your email address to 'darrenprice [at] gmail [dot] com' an mark it up as Gmail Invite or similar.
