Can anyone recommend a good flashgun unit for a canon AE-1 old-style manual camera? I am looking for a flashgun with a decent power output and controls please.

This might help... Click on the link for Speedlights.

If these come don't up trumps, try searching for Vivitar 283's and 285's.

    HTH's...

The hammerhead types of flash look good, the problem is finding them on sale.

This where the auction sites can help Ayad. Also try some of the long-established photographic dealers like Ffordes, Bristol Cameras, Park Cameras, T4 Cameras et al... I seem to recall getting a 'centralised' listing of all UK dealers recently via Google. Try it...

One other avenue, once you have a list, is to phone a few and ask them to contact you when they get something in. People are trading in stuff all the time - and they will be keen for your business.

    And then there's eBay...!

    Good Luck.

I used to use a vivitar 283 when I had a canon AE-1 and can thoroughly recommend one. A very good buy, fast recycling, powerful, easy to use, well made. What more do you want!

Have you considered the Metz guns. They`re also very good. If you upgrade/change cameras just change the SCA adaptor. You need an SCA311 adaptor for your Canon.

Look around for old sunpak 383`s or 3600`s, they were two very good guns.

What models would be compatible with a AE-1?

Any model that accepts the SCA300 modules.

Check out the Metz site, they used to have a camera/ flashgun compatability thingy.

The current flashgun I use with my canon ae-1 is a Starblitz 160m Flash Unit. I know for a fact that it's a very basic flash but how does the vivitar 283 compare in terms of distance and power output?

    edit: and the vivitar 285?

No idea about the spec of your Starblitz gun, but you'll get some of the 283 figures here. 285 is similar with regard to spec, but has a zoom head for different focal length lenses and may be lower voltage triggering for use with more modern cameras.
