It's been going on for centuries. It's futile.

In the first Sherlock Holmes novel, Dr Watson was just home from the 2nd Afghan War! Centuries is right - and the futility.

Lol my great grandfather served in the army from the early part of the 20th century up until the end of 45, a lot of his postings between the two wars was to India and the north west frontier, what is now the area between Pakistan and Afghanistan and what I should imagine involved a fair bit of peace keeping Smile
