There's no war - both Nikon and Canon have excellent cameras and lenses. Technology is advancing and it's just progress. Will be interesting to see what the IQ of the Canon 50D is like and whether there will be two new full frame cameras from Canon released shortly but both Nikon and Canon have their strengths and weaknesses. Reality is both systems in the right hands create brilliant images and similarly both systems in the "wrong" hands create crap images.

I wish there were more camera manufacturers than just Nikon and Canon.

Just run both systems side by side, you will still need to keep up with the latest models and out of pocket but at least you will have the best Smile

have 2 agree with you ,, but will this d90 that nikon has waiting in the wings,,, as to speak,, if unveailed soon and is near the same spec as canon,, it could start a price war,, which would be good for us,,

Nikon and Canon are both streets ahead of the other brands - it's a good job they are competing, keeps the pricing lower for all us photographers!

From my post here a few weeks ago "I promise you that in the Autumn the mighty Canon will produce a series of cameras that will make eBay crash under the weight of second-hand Nikon tat."

The 50D is just a warning shot.

Prepare for Shock and Awe. Grin

    Shock and Awe??

What about Sony, Olympus or Pentax? Surely they're not going to just roll over and go to sleep?

As I'm new to digiland, I don't understand what Four Thirds is, but I hear Olympus are introducing a new version.

Frank, in every business there's a couple of competing big brands that dominate: Coke and Pepsi, Huggies and Pampers, McDonald's and Burger King, Wilkinson Sword and Gillette etc then there's the, er, well the also-rans. Smile

It's all a game to see who can grab our money the fastest, and keep on grabbing it because were're never satisfied. Who makes certain were're never satisfied? The manufacturers, of course. If Nikon service was faster in Canada than it is, I'd still be using my old D70. We get caught up in the drive to always have what we are told is the best. How many have mastered even one of the cameras you've had in the past 6 years? I'm no different than the rest, it's just that retirement brings certain restrictions that aren't all bad.Wink

    Chris,

I understand that. I've been in the grocery business almost 40 years.

Every brand has its place. That's why Aldi and Lidl exist!

In these credit crunching times, there may be some folk who will buy on price. I don't ignore that Canon and Nikon are top of the pile, I happen to own Canon equipment. But does this superiority in sales equate to best quality? That is what I was trying to get across.

    Denny,

I hear you my friend. Great post.

I've still got my Eos 3 which hasn't been used for about 4 months. Did I ever master it? No chance!

I've still got a pile of film to get through - may take me 5 years! Smile
