I reached into my camera bag to check a serial number of my 50mm lens, and clumsily dropped it to the floor. It only fell a couple of feet. So I quickly attached it to my Camera and low and behold it won't focus. Even in manual mode. If i take it off the camera and try adjusting the focus ring it just slides round and round. Please tell me I haven't cooked it !!!

    Thanks in advance.
    Bruce.

    Insurance springs to mind.

Sorry to hear of it Bruce. I think that major surgery (at least) will be required. It might cost more than it is worth but see what it will cost.

Oh dear... Certainly not the answers I was hoping to read. Nothing a Canon repair centre can look at?

I think you'll be surprised how cheap the repair will be. I've had lenses re-built and elements replaced for less than £100

Thanks Keith, that sounds reassuring. I suppose I can only check with Canon themselves.

    Bruce, have a look here

    https://self-service.canon-europe.com/uk/pages/

Last repair I had done, they took the lens in, and rang me back with an estimate before doing any work.

Thanks Steve, had a look at the site but couldn't find any info on my particular problem. I will contact Canon tomorrow and see what the damage will be. Just can't get over how easily it was damaged. Read a couple of forums about the design fault of the lens on the internet. Suppose lenses aren't made for dropping are they !!!

Thank goodness it wasn't the F1.2L!!! Still doesn't make it any better.

I had the same problem on a 50mm mki, it was dropped and the focus ring spun, several weeks later it fell from the top shelf on to concrete, out of shear curiosity I put it on a body and was amazed to see it working again as if nothing had happened other than a dent on the filter ring !
    Thats Luck !!

Try putting it back in auto focus and manual adjust the focus ring.

Let me know if anything what happens?.

Hi Andy. Tried doing that. Still no movement. After turning the focusing ring for quite a while I eventually got some movement !!!

    Bruce.
