It's not something I have ever used Cathy, but had a look.

When I go to Filter>Render there is a Lighting Effects item on the sub-menu but it is greyed-out - which would lead me to suspect that it is only available under certain conditions. Is yours missing altogether?

Yes it was missing altogether but after a bit of ferreting about I had to right click on the Photoshop application folder....go to 'get info' and then on the general tab change my CS5.5 to 32 bit rather than the 64....relaunch and voila.

I use the lighting effect on textured backgrounds before I paint in the foreground .........like this....

    Thank you for that.

Wanted to use the same filter on an image this afternoon, and was a bit surprised when it wasn't there.

Slightly Off-Topic query - CS5.5? I was trying to download PixelBender and found it wouldn't install. A message popped up to inform me that I needed version 5.1, but after a quick investigation I discovered I have CS5.0.4 and upon checking for updates I was told I've got the latest version. Further investigation needed! Any info would be appreciated.
    Alex.

CS5.5 refers to some of the other software in Adobe's Master Collection. Dreamweaver and In Design for example. Photoshop is unaffected though.
The most recent version of Photoshop is CS5.1.
I've not heard of CS5.0.4. Sounds as if you're short of an update.
    There is no Photoshop CS5.5

The plot thickens! When I open Photoshop, the version appears on the start-up window as 12.0.4, CS5 being Photoshop 12. When I look for updates I'm informed that I've got the latest updates installed, so I'm a bit baffled as to where 5.1 comes from. I had difficulty installing Pixelbender, and on taking a closer look discovered I was trying to install the version for CS5.1. When I tried again, using the correct version for CS5, it installed correctly. I'm wondering why updates don't turn CS5 into CS5.1? Am I looking for too much? Smile

    Strange!
Mine lights up as 12.0.2 x32. the last bit referring to iy being the 32 bit version.
I'm sure that it changed fron CS5 to CS5.1 after an update.
I can't se a difference in its performance but he desktop icon er-named itself once it had happened.

Photoshop CS came after PS7, so it is version 8 (internally)

    Hence CS2 was v9, cs5 version 12

Aye, it fires up as 12.0.4x64

    Mine says 12.0.4 x32

Which is strange as I thought I was running the 64-bit version!

Sounds to me as if the software's updating but not altering the "name" on the front page.

Not sure about yours though LF!
