I have a nikon d3100 and used the live view for the first time today. can anyone tell me why the countdown in the left corner starts, and can it be turned off.

Its the timer to tell you how long till live view will turn off. Your camera it generates a lot of heat running in live view mode so there is a limited time it can run before it turns off. The heating can be caused by image processing and sampling the sensor. In some cameras the mirror mech is on a spring so a small motor is powering away keeping the mirror up, adding to the heating problems. Also running in this mode drains the battery fast.

So Nikon have added this timer to protect the camera. It is on page 42 of the manual
