Hi Andy, I have an SB800 & an SC29 cord, and have pondered this myself, The only thing that worries me is the possibility of pulling the tripod over with the gun on it.

So as yet I have not tried it in anger, But I have an old velbon tripod (£20 quids worth or so) And have had the whole shebang set up just to evaluate any potential problems, I figured that if I weighted the velbon down a bit It might just do the job, So long as your careful.

I have also experimented with a Homemade flash bracket, Not unlike the Manfrotto one ( they are £35 quid ) My home made effort allows me to extend the SB800 to over 2 feet to the left of the camera, And shorter if required, It has two advantages in that You can't pull it over, And it leaves you still able to move freely around your subject, And if I say so myself it don't look to daft.

In answer to your question I'd say any small tripod would do the job.

Possibly out of my depth here, but I thought that one of the features of the D200 was that the internal flash acted as a "wireless commander" so that you wouldn't need a cord and therefore there would be no risk of pulling the stand/tripod over?

Spot-On Peter, And in some circumstances it works a treat, But it's not great at everything.

The flash signal from the commanding camera is recieved via a small optical Eye in the side of the SB800, so it needs to be to the left of the camera, And forward of the Onboard to activate it.

It Kinda does the job but as I have found not in all situations.

Had it been wireless as in a Radio Trigger, then yes the cable would be totally redundant.

The other advantage of the SC29 cable is that it has the Infra Red AF assist beam fitted to the Hot Shoe mount, So that you get the AF reading from the Camera's position when used on a Flash bracket, Otherwise the AF beam comes from the SB800 where ever it is located, Having said that you can (with an SC29) switch the AF assist On and Off.

Kinda mad really, but has it's use's.

! Andy ! I just re read your post and see that what yer looking for is a Mini tripod ((( Doh silly me )))

I guess the answer is just about any small pod, depending on how much you intend to use it.

If it's occasional then anything in the £20 quid and under bracket, Having said that Manfrotto do a mini Tripod that is around £24 quid.

So I think it's a case of you pay's yer money & takes your pick really.

I like my Slik mini-tripod although I also have a plastic one whose legs turn round to permit it to slip into my jean pocket ...it is OK for my Nikon 5700 but the ballhead is a bit weak for a heavier camera I think.

For just a flashgun one of those silly little flimsy things would probably do but a decent one like the Slik will do for the camera at other times.

Slik cost me about 12 pounds equivalent.

I use a lighting stand screwed up into the base of the SB support. Lately, bought an umbrella holder and it's now a versatile cordless unit that will accept all my brollies!

Thanks for all replies and have been really helpful I am just wondering if anyone thinks that a Velbon CX mini would be a useful tripod to buy any comments?

I've been using the Velbon CX Mini for quite a while now with my two Fuji cameras and have no complaints at all. Very useful for when I'm doing my guitar shots as it gets laid on the floor or a low bed. Not sure if that is of any use!
