I'm trying to decide where to spend my bi-annual week in the sun for this year but as I'm not hugely travelled I thought I'd ask you guys for recommendations. I went to Keffalonia 2 years ago and I have to say it was stunningly beautiful. Fantastic beaches, amazing scenery and of course beautiful weather. I liked it also because it's not a night club strip type of place (I'm past that lol). So anyone familiar with Keffalonia will know what I'm looking for this time. I was thinking of visiting its neighbour Zakynthos. Anyone been there? Or any other spots that you guys would recommend? Paul

Went to Rhodes a few years ago, was lovely but a bit of a clubbin hotspot now. Depends on your budget and how far you want to travel but I'd thoroughly recommend Dubai, although depends on the time of year your going too - gets a bit warm in them there parts ;-0

Thanks K. Should have mentioned I suppose, planning on September. Kids are gone back to school so I think most places are quieter at that time. Dubai might be a bit pricy. Planning on spending about 500 (350stg I think) for the week and hire a car or small jeep too.

I've been to both Keffalonia and Zakynthos. On a guided tour of Zakynthos we were told that when the tourist income started to pick up, Keffalonia purposely stayed a quieter island and Zakynthos went for the younger, noisier tourist. So they both attract different types of holiday makers.

Keffalonia was much quieter and more peaceful as a whole island, but then again we did stay in the main party town in Zakynthos and that was almost all bars, clubs, restaurants and gift shops. Beautiful beaches though. If you want quiet then definitely don't got anywhere near Laganas on Zakynthos!

Zakynthos town was nice though and fairly peaceful for the day shopping and chilling out but we didn't stay there in the evening. Argostoli on Keffalonia was better for shopping, Zakynthos town seemed somewhat smaller.

Not been to Kefalonia but have been to Zakynthos. It's a really nice island - not too big and plenty to see.

We stayed at Argassi, which is about 4km from Zakynthos town, 9 years ago. It's a reasonably lively resort but not as bad as Laganas. We went in May when it was quiet.

Zakynthos town wasn't as nice as other island capitals. It didn't have the character or amount of shops as say Corfu town or Kos town but the beaches - especially the shipwreck beach - Blue caves and pretty little villages made up for it.

As well as Zakynthos (aka Zante), we've been to Corfu and Lesvos twice, Kos and Thassos once, as well as Halkidiki and Parga on the mainland. I'd go back to any of them Smile

The main thing with anywhere is choose your resort and accommodation etc. carefully and you won't go far wrong.

If you like Greece and quiet, then you can do worse than check out the Pelion region of mainland greece... Quiet, Peaceful, relaaaaaaaaxed.

If you like the quiet life, Madeira might suit....Can't recommend,as haven't used, but look for the ads by Atlantic holidays (Sunday papers) they seem to offer some good deals. Hardly any beach, but the scenery is stunning.or...how about Gozo (island off Malta), that I can recommend. or..for a change, try Slovenia (Austria but cheaper)..Lake Bled area is beautiful or...having just been there, Sagres/Praia da Luz in Portugal (less noisy than the Albufeira end)...or Tuscany..stay by the coast near Pisa and drive around...wonderful sights...Lucca, San Gimingniano (is that how you spell it)..Corsica was quite nice too (better than Sardinia)...but each to their own

hope you enjoy wherever you go

All great recommendations folks. Sue, I'll be sure not to stay too close to Laganas then. Need to chill!!
Kevan, thanks I'l look those up. Maybe Corfu.. Good point on tgetting the accomodation right etc. We were SO lucky with Keffalonia.
But then again the Greek mainland sounds like an option too magicboy.
    Silvers, you've been around eh.
    Hmmmmm...
    Cheers Guys.

    Have you considered Majorca.
May or September are IMO the best months to go.
Lots of photographic potential.Gorgeous weather, good food, dirt cheap for both flights and car hire.

    Justin.

I'll check that out too Jeef. Cheers.
Justin, I would always, from what I hear, have considered Majorca a sit by the pool or beach type place. Didn't think it was a place with photographic opportunity. So I'll put it on the list, cheers. PAul

What about the Italian lakes, plenty photo opportunities there, also the Amalfi coast is beautiful, taking in the Isle of Capri.

    Hi Paul,

    500 including car is tight.

I'd recommend the eastern Algarve, a world away for the other Algarve and prices up to 50% less. Great nature reserve also and photography encouraged.

South of Italy is also wonderful and cheap Campania/Abruzzo/Puglia etc.

Wouldn't recommend Slovenia (great country btw) in September. It can get very wet and I mean very.

    T.
