Do I need special software. All I get is a still image with the audio running in the background.

Quicktime player should do it
Thanks for that. I have downloaded quicktime and run a video file. Its better than previously, the audio is there but it seems to be showing approx every tenth frame and so very jerky.
VLC player is one of the best options for viewing video files.
Stuttering playback is often a result of an inadequate graphics card.
If you have an HD television, you can view the video files that you've shot by connecting the camera to the television with an HDMI lead, there won't be any playback issues doing it that way.
Great Justin,. thank you.
