Well I have been enjoying photography for about 5 years now and have come to a stage in my life when I want to work with something I enjoy well heres the million dollar question How do you actually get into certain fields of photography I have been spurned on latley by intrest and even purchases of my photographs, I want to take up photography as a living as i see it weddings portraits events etc seem the way to go , my question is how do you get your foot in the door as lets say a wedding photographer ? I am thinking along the lines of an assistant but dont really know where to start , can anyone give me a push in the right direction thanks
Try doing a search in the forums,
As this has been brought up many times before.
Why wedding photography ?
It'll be the first question an established pro will ask you if you want to assist them - well either that or can you make good coffee....
Mike.
wedding and portrait work seem to be the only fields where money is readily made theres no exceptence as such you are paid to do a job and you do it ulike trying to get your work excepted else where, dont get me wrong I enjoy portrait work and love working with people although its the two things I have least experience with , at this point you are probally thinking I am mad , but I really am desperate to try and make a living from something I enjoy and this seems the easiest option in a way and i just want to hear how some of the peeps on here started out ?
Lee,
Get some real good images together, develop a style if you can, get yourself a website, advertising, insurance, equipment and membership of an organisation. Then work hard to try and get your name known in your chosen field with your possible customers.
BTW - how about putting together a 5-year plan and trying to work to that ?. Also - remember that there's nowhere near as much money in photography as there is in certain sectors of IT.
Good luck.
Spend 10 years of your life telling people 'you dont do weddings' then one day give in....
....thats how I did it. ![]()

Completely the wrong attitude if you dont mind me saying so and I would disagree that wedding and portrait work is the only fields where money is made regularly.
In fact I'd go so far as to say that most weddings and certainly most portraits are one of the least earners per hour than other areas of photography. Then again if you think you can turn up shoot for 2 hours go home and stick the money in the bank then you really are deluding yourself to whats involved.

Yep thats what everyone thinks.
Get yourself 100k, invest 1/4 in equipment, 1/4 in advertising and the other half to do you until you become established and you will have made it.
Quote: You say in your PF that you are currently working as a semi pro doing weddings
Quote: Talon your profile indicates that you are already doing weddings on a semi-professional level
Uhh! Not anymore it doesn't.
Lee maybe you could let us know exactly where you are at in your plans, otherwise any advice offered may be inacurate and even the incorrect route. No point in teaching you to suck eggs if you already have a number of the basic aspects covered.
Lee, there is tons of stuff on wedding photography on epz if you have a look. I reckon if you have a real passion for wedding photography, an ability to get on with people not on a 1:1 ratio but sometimes up to 1:300 ratio or more, know all the basics so well you don't even have to think about them (they are as natural as sleeping and eating) your chances of success are far greater that if you are just doing it merely for s!
'Tis a funny business being very much a people business and if you have an enthusiasm your clients will spot that, so will the guests and more business will flow; ermm how did I start .... I joined Kodak Weddings for a spell ... there are better ways like offering to assist a pro; read loads, attend seminars etc.
Best of luck m8, Peter.
