Okay, I guess this has probably been discussed before, but what is the general concensus on landscape pictures with water - I think that it requires more technique to capture flowing water (milky) rather than still water images - ensuring that highlight detail is not clipped etc..etc...

Some blur is ok but 30 second exposures look ridiculous in my opinion.

I like it wet...and with a splash of Ribena in it.

Can there be a general concensus? Surely it's an individual thing. 80% of people who respond here might say they like their moving water milky. So you might take your pictures accordingly, and find that most people who see your pictures prefer non-milky water.

You start a thread about it and add up the answers Wink

I TOTALLY agree Malcolm. SO many just end up looking like a river of milk.

Will this lactose intolerance never end?

I like it to appear natural, as it does to the eye. Very fast shutter speeds that freeze the water (you know what I mean!) look very false, and very slow ones make the water look like mist.

Interesting question. I usualy take some with an ND to extend the exposure time and some with a faster shutter speed. I can then have the choice of which to use.

I hate sliky and milky, much prefer splashes and blobs. I don't mind a hint of motion, and quite like the idea of blended exposures with a bit of both. But never milky!

But you'll get as much consensus on this as if you asked about frames and borders. The original question says "silky and milky" might take more technique..Maybe so, maybe not, but either way it's hardly the point is it - it's whether you like the result

Water is not normally seen as milky to the eye. On the other hand we don't see it as frozen droplets either.

The real skill is getting the right balance between the two.

Though not being a fan of the five hour exposure or even the very long just under a minute jobs - mainly because they are lazy photography - in the end it's down to each individual person.

I will say this. Milky, silky water is not as popular with the buying public as some would have you believe...unless it's as part of a complete abstract.

Can't stand that ruddy 'cotton wool' water effect.
Water should look like water, not like an explosion in a cotton bud factory.

OK, there is the odd exception that proves the rule, but generally it looks naf.
