Sat looking through the photography gallery and WOW! Some truly talented people out there in epz land. Truly inspirational.
Wondered how long you've all been into this wonderful hobby and what got you into it?
Kathryn
Initially got into photography while going to motorcycle racing in the late 70's, that ended with the death of Norman "Bruno" Brown in 1983 ( it was 2009 before I went to any motorsport event again ), but the photography continued and developed over the years since and loving being part of the epz community.
Grew up in a household of photographers. My dad, my brother and my uncle were all photographers so when they all got together, there wasn't a lot more to talk about.
Took my first photograph when I was 8 years old in 1964 and still on that gradual learning curve which I'm sure is endless.
Got the interest at an early age but got the passion about 25 years ago. Interest will get you results but passion will give you the right results in my honest opinion. ![]()
Good luck with your photography everyone.
I kicked off about the same time as Steinbeck with a "Kodak Brownie" which my grandparents bought for me and I've never really stopped. I went through cameras of all types and descriptions in the early days and finally got an OM10 about 1980 (I think).
I used that for a few years, until about 1985, then moved on to an OM40, which, at the time was the bee's-knees. I used that until 2003 (Yes really!) when I got my first digital camera.
By that time the OM40 was pretty shagged out so I gave it to a charity shop with all of the lenses and bits, which seems like insanity now.
Dunno what happened to the OM10.
In 1962 I was into bike racing. I had a bad accident which kept me off the bike for several months, and on a whim I took up photography to counter the boredom of not being able to ride my bike. I was soon bitten hard by the bug and I am still on with it after half a century.
Even before that I was a snapshotter with a box Brownie, but it was that injury that really got me going. Photographing racing cyclists in action helped me to feel I was still part of that scene.
Took my first pics around 1973, motorcycle races with a '126' compact camera (strangely the results were not up to what I saw in the magazines!!), saved my pocket money/paper round money & got a Zenith E about a year later & learned about developing/printing & theory of how lenses/ISO/light interact. got an Oly OM10 around '80, staying with the OM system through the 80's (OM 1, 2sp, 4 & far too many lenses) & getting some regular Motorcycle/ motorsport work published in mostly local (& a few national) magazines, also moved into medium format kit for landscape/portrait work. Backbone of my work was always sport/action but would give anything a go!. Late '80's to mid '90's didn't do much photography, more into working in recording studio/playing in bands, main pics were for the odd album/CD cover promotional work etc.
Got a digi-compact (kodak) then a 'bridge camera (Fuji 602) before getting rid of all film gear for a pittance(darkroom in house was converted into a baby room/bedroom
), splashing on the DSLR in 2004, Nik D70) & getting regularly published (mostly locally) in motorcycle/motorsport magazines.
& have been very effectively 'wallet hoovered' by photography ever since!!
From this year I plan on returning to more 'hobby' based photography (not even applying for press accreditation this year) due to personal & health reasons & plan on trimming down the gear massively (keep an eye on the classifieds soon!! LOL)
Learned over the years that I am more interested & get more enjoyment/fulfillment in the challenge of taking & producing the images than what the results are, (i.e. the journey is more important than the destination!)
always liked photography

frank.
Five years and two months.
A relative gave me £20 gift to go towards a framed picture of my local fell, couldn't find one I liked so bought myself a camera to see if I could make a decent print to hang on the wall.
This is what I made:

I've been interested in photographing mountains ever since.
I've heard it said that the best landscapers are hill walkers/mountaineers first, then get into photography later... they know all the best places way before they get the camera bug ![]()
Always had a love of photography ever since being a kid and playing about in my late Fathers darkroom. Used to be a specimen angler (Pike/Carp/Barbel/Chub) until I was badly smashed up at work in a truck accident in the early nineties. That kind of put paid to the angling as I could no longer carry all the kit or stand for long periods of time. So redirected all my efforts into a few other hobbies, photography being just one of them, along with wildlife and entomology (insects) and remote control model boat building.
What's nice for me is that whilst photography is the main hobby, my other interests compliment each other pretty much....I suppose EPZ is another hobby too, because of my injuries from the accident I've been left unable to work, hence the reason I get to spend more time than most folk on here, some day's I'm unable to get out the house.....If I didn't have EPZ and my hobbies I think I'd go round the bloody twist. Well I know I would as it's already happened on several occasions.........
So there you go that's my story......

Makes a lot of sense... Many Seasoned Landscaper Togs tend to go for the views that are well shot before and have nice indentations to plop the tripod in....How many pics are needed of that bloody jetty in differing conditions etc etc etc....I would call shots like that bought shots....Nowt new....the hill walker etc that knows a fresh patch and the weather conditions of the area will always come up trumps in my book....I believe its called originality![]()
Cheers guys, i like hearing about other people and their experiences ![]()
For me the interest began as a child taking snaps on family holidays, got put off for a while when taking photos at my youngest sisters wedding 10 years as had a film camera and somehow i used the same film twice and you could clearly see one set of prints on top of the other, gutted was an understatement. My mum and sisters bought me my first and only digital, my fuji that i use now and thats when i got the passion, absolutely love the hobby. Would love a new camera with all the gubbins but keeping a roof over my head priority now so make do with what i have and be the best that i can be. You guys here have been fabulous with your critique. wouldn't have improved otherwise
Will keep plodding on as its the only thing i truly enjoy.
Kathryn

This shot of Oscar prob my favourite and the one i feel is my best so far.
