Having purchased a Canon 300D, could anyone tell me how many photos I could get on a 256mb compactflash card, at the 6MP setting? Or do you have a general chart that would show how many photos per card?

This will vary a little according to the ISO setting and the colour/detail in the pictures but at the highest quality jpg, you should get about 70-72 shots on the 256 card.

If you use RAW, you will only get 30-34 shots on the same size card.

This is based on my experience with two 128 cards - hence the reason I carry an X-drive to transfer them onto.

    With a 256 card my 300D predicts 78 @ISO 100 77 @200, 71@400 65@800, 60 @ 1,600. Go RAW and its 34 @ ISO 100. As it depends on actual photo's the numbers vary of course.

I have a 512Mb card and I recommend it rather than the 256Mb as its easy to fill with this camera. Oh and get at least 40x as they are down to @80 now and you can use the extra speed. The 51 doubles the above number of photo's of course.

If you have the 300D, look at page 49 of the instruction book!

Details are given for a 128 MB card (at all resolutions). Simple maths to work it out for the larger cards.

Thanks everyone. I've purchased the camera, but am waiting on it being delivered, so I don't have a manual yet! :o)

    All the best

From what I have learnt, don't put all your photo's in one basket, try to use 2-3 cards (say 128mb) rather than 1 card with a higher memory.

If it's sheer quantity that you're after I've started using a 4Gb Hitachi Microdrive with my 300D and I'm pleased with the results (although storage is noticably slower). If you need to take multiple shots quickly, then go for a fast CF card (as mentioned above the 40x cards are getting more affordable). As for multiple cards - I'd agree (I currently use a 512Mb card and 2 microdrives). I paid 274 inc. shipping for my pair of 4Gb drives from a guy on eBay.
