hi mmslam
i have been useing a sigma 150-500 and a canon 400 5.6 for 8 months and find both lenses ex quality on finished prints.
however the sigma is more versatile as the zoom copes with small and large birds when sitting in a fixed hide, but the canon dose give a sharper finished image that needs less sharpening.
hope this is helpfull

a lens for a bird,,,sounds like a fair swap. Can organise a frozen turkey or do you want it alive?

The Canon 100-400mm F4-F5.6 is good value for money, second hand about £750.
