It costs me £56 for a same day return with the car, Portsmouth to Fishbourne - driver only. Passengers are extra.
A very expensive stretch of water.
The Hovercraft is about £14 per person for a day return.
I spent the first 18 years of my life on the Isle of Wight, so willing to answer any questions about locations, etc.
A lot depends on what sort of thing you're after. Plenty of general landscape around - a couple of the famous sites are over West Wight - the Needles/Alum Bay, and up over Freshwater Down towards Tennyson Monument (best viewed from the golf course on the hill to the east of Freshwater Bay). Lots of beaches for finding objects to snap - there's a nice walk westwards from Bembridge Harbour with lots of weathered wood - breakwater remains, etc - or nearby at St Helens Duver there's lots of nice sand-dunes. For history, the obvious ones are Carisbrooke Castle and Osbourne House as previously mentioned. Whippingham Church is a classic piece of unusual architecture. Quite a lot of wildlife along the banks of the River Medina, or at the nature reserve at Newtown Creek.

From my experience, the ferry prices aren't set in stone and seem to alter constantly with demand etc.
I travel over there every 2-3 years for a week or so and also sometimes travel over there for the day to visit a friend. To take a car from Portsmouth to Fishbourne usually costs us between £75 - £100 return for a week. A day visit, last time I did it was about £30 (people carrier with 6 passengers)It is more expensive to travel at peak times, but I think we'll have to consider that we are aiming to visit a lot of areas in one day, so can't restrict ourselves too much.
Would it be better to do landscapes and beaches at the beginning and end of the day and castles etc in the middle??
I do like the mini bus idea, if there's enough of us. But I think we could only justify the cost for a 17 seater. A 9 seater, wouldn't be worth it. I could take 7 in my car!
So I take it we agree on a May visit?
A May visit is sounding the best option, it is more on how we travel?
If not all in one bus do we car share and meet on the island at an agreed point?
I would prefer it to be a Saturday as it is going to be a long day I will need the Sunday rest.
So we have the 7th/8th or 14th/15th or 21st/22nd and the 28th/29th.
Then a time and place to be sorted nearer the time.

Losing your stamina Paul? You must be getting old ![]()
The 28th/29th will be the beginning of half term week, so may be busier/more expensive.
If the majority prefer a Saturday, I'm thinking 21st or 28th would be best.So how are we all fixed for those dates?
Once the date is fixed we will need to know who's definately in, rain or shine. Then we can decide on transport/times and get booked.
Quote: then the 14th would be my choice
Ditto, but not averse to the 21st
Ok, I'll give it a bit longer for others to state their preference, then, once the date is agreed, I'll set this up on the meet page ![]()

I propose that if we have enough interest to fill a mini bus, we attempt to go with that option. So it would be helpful if people could let us know whether they'd prefer to make their own way or possibly board the EPZ sunshine coach.
I'd imagine it would be best for us to meet and leave our cars somewhere fairly near to, or on a direct route to Portsmouth.
The May date is cool if we could come along.
Me and Tim (Cirrus) Osie ,Morpheus , and erm Mr Och et al , all live on the Island (Im sure there are others here or nearby for the Hovercraft)
Sounds like a good meet
and Ill try and reccy some good ferry deals if this converts.
