It seems that Apple wants to further control their customers.
iTunes Web app

Not only will this free the user from using the itunes installed application it will been that the music\videos users buy can only streamed or downloaded to ipods etc. The music files themselves will never be allowed to reside on the users computer. Yet another method of controlling what the user can or cannot do with the music they have paid for.

Not sure why anyone would want to use iTunes. There are loads of much better apps out there.

Where did you get this from? It certainly didn't say that in the linked article.

I always liked the idea behind iTunes that it didn't matter where your music was on your hard disk you could see it however you wanted, as rock, as pop, as sixties, as albums, as whatever you wanted and a track could be in more than one category at the same time.

It was a bit silly that you had to tether your iPhone to a PC or Mac running iTunes in order to get your purchased music. They've changed it (for the better I think) now so you just need the phone.

Bad things about iTunes was that it would force you to install Quicktime and trick you into installing Safari. I use this now, it's like iTunes on steroids.
