On Thursday 22nd October, join press photographer James Vellacott for an hour long chat.
From 7-8pm, James will be answering any questions you may have about press photography. James has taken photographs for the Daily Mirror since 1995 so he has a few pieces of advice and tales to tell about working in the press.
The chatroom will open five minutes before the session is due to start so be ready and waiting with your questions.

I hope its that the industry is haemorrhaging jobs as news papers make huge profits from ripping off happy clappy so called citizen journalist.
"Mark, are you ever happy"
nah hes a troll,
theres always going to be some money to be made in press work, not as much as the past decades, but thats the same for most markets .
Citizen journos are going to get streetwise and start demanding money for pictures before printing, especially good material.
To be fair to Mark, his point is not about making money from photos per se but about the huge numbers (and they are huge) of journalists and photographers that are losing their jobs whilst the newspaper owners still make huge profits.
So many newspapers these days buy copy from organisations like PA and simply hack this about to make it look 'original'. That is why factual errors are so often propagated across many newspapers as they are working from the same original source.
As well as 'citizen photographers', most newspapers source their images from one of the wire services under subscription arrangements (so it is in their interest to get their images from them as it doesn't cost them any 'extra').
However, away from the news side of things, feature based publications (including newspaper glossys) are still fertile ground for the good journalist/photographer so it's not all doom and gloom ![]()
Talking of not all doom and gloom, I'm off to sunny Crete in 5 hours so must finish a job I'm editing and get off to the airport (nice and warm in Crete but of course I mustn't rub it in
)
I at pains to see what he will be doing, is he chest puffing his work, which I have no doubt is very good or offering advice on how to get in on the act ?
More people left college as fully qualified press photographers last year than they were jobs advertised in the last 6 years.
Dozens and scores of very experienced press photographers have been made redundant by Local newspapers and national in the last 12 months.
One is introducing a new contract which will see freelance income cut by up to 95%, other will soon follow
The industry is in severe decline and no place to be looking for a income.
If this his message then hats off to him, if its showing off his work, then double hats off, but if its advertising the industry from a career point of view to the public, then he better get his tin hat on !
friends in the press industry have just got new contracts , some have two at 15k plus a pop, rather than income going down, they are doing less work for much more money. I know I went after one of the contracts.
He probally will need a tin hat, fall the weekend warrior crew to throw their handgrenades at.
if too many people are being trained for far too few jobs , then this is the fault of the colleges and unis, not the industry. The colleges and Unis are getting far too greedy over tution fees.

But thats all down to supply and demand though isn't Paul, the applications for such courses are seriously over subscribed by people thinking that they will sit around on a speedboat off a small island with a long lens and get 'that' shot which will earn them thousands, and unfortunately no-one is telling them the reality of it.
Also gutted I'm going to miss this ![]()
Don't forget tonight's special chatroom session. We look forward to seeing you there. Session with James Vellacott
