As Kodak are just about to start shipping the 1400 Dye Sub printer as a replacement for their 8500, I was wondering if any of you guys were privy to whether this is an improved model, or just a cheaper update ?

It seems to be significantly cheaper than the 8500 which has a suspiciously similar spec, so what should I do ? Try to get an 8500 and pay the premium, or wait and take the risk that the build quality of the 1400 has been compromised to reduce unit cost ?

We will be getting one in for review mid December, and we have two as prizes planned for the next competition.

Just wondering, Pete (not that I expect to win anything, Im just an excited amateur, and many others on this site are a lot better than me): are prizes in the next competition also reserved for UK residents only, or is this one for everyone, regardless where they live. (Yes, I know - you can always compete just for "the honour", but if the prizes still go to UK residents only, that would take a bit of the fun out of it, wouldnt it. Actually, quite a lot of the fun...)

Conrad, unfortunately most of the prize sponsors specify UK only, each for numerous reasons of there own. The only way around this would be to become friends with a UK member who would take delivery and send on to you...if you winWinkThere would be no support in terms of GT outside UK either. Shame but it's out of our hands.

If anyone has contacts with European distributors who they can swing a more "universal" prize I'd be happy for them to arrange it for us.

I do have friends with a UK address, Pete, just not EPZ members (yet - I hope I will have those as well after 5 May 2005). I do understand the situation, and in fact, I suspected thats what it was. Its just not very eh... motivating.
And if I had the kind of contacts you suggest, I'd probably own much nicer gear than I do now!
Never mind. Ill leave the competing to EPZ members who have a UK address, a lot of whom take much better pictures anyway.

No reason why you can't use your UK friends to accept the prize Smile they don't have to be members.

Ill keep it in mind, Pete - thanks for the suggestion. If its just a matter of having a mailing address in the right country, Ill consider the matter solved. Now that I know this, it's time I improved my pictures...

Will be very interested in that review Pete - apparently professional photographer are doing the same in December.

Using a Mitsubishi CP-8000 at the mo but its a beast of a thing to lug around. I was thinking of getting one of the CP-330 battery powered jobs but was told to wait for this Kodak.
Will be interested in what you come up with Wink
