Hi all,
Now I know that the largest single challenge of landscape photography is location finding - getting out, getting your shoes muddy and finding those compositions that are tucked away and others may not have found.
Much as I love this part of it, I am currently stuck with an injury that has been hanging round for ages and will be with me for at least another few months, and I can't walk any real distance, certainly not if I'm carrying the lowepro and tripod.
Can anyone recommend some road side locations (within 50m of the road) in or near the Peak District? I'm aware of a few and I'd be happy to drive around endlessly looking for more but the docs have also banned from spending much time in the car, which is why I'm trying to tap into the collective wisdom of ePZ.
Any help greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Lianna
If you drive the roads between Buxton and Uttoxeter there are plenty of places you can stop and get good views. Also around Castleton, up towards the Blue John mine and Mam Tor. In fact the Peak District is possibly one of the best places in the UK for 'road trip' photos. ![]()

First of all hope you get well soon.
The one that readily springs to mind is Surprise view.

There are many beech Woodland areas around the Peaks (not just Padley) - all look stunning at this time of the year.
There are litrally hundreds of dry stone walls, gates & styles each of which can give good subject matter, or help in the composition.
Why not ditch the tripod for a day and travel light if its a problem.
But why not take the time to try other forms of photography, explore the location near home - even if at face value its not tooo photogenic - try a longer lens to isolate detail. Or why not try some still life photography - even if its "not your thing" it will at least keep you occupied, make you think about compositions differently, you will be surprised how much you learn and take into your landscape work when your fit & well again.
Winnats Pass near Castleton can be very photogenic (I htink taht is the road Digicammad referred to).

In fac that website has quite a few 'scenic drives' in it. Perhpas I'll use it myself sometime soon ![]()
It was indeed Mike.
There is also a pub car park from which you get a great view across the valley to the Roches and Hen Cloud. Think this is it
Also, just realised that other road is the one between Buxton and Leek, not Uttoxeter. ![]()
Monsal Head for valley and viaduct (and the pubs quite good too) and the Derwent valley reservoirs (road alongside them) spring to mind as additions to the other suggestions.

The carpark at the top of Clodhall Lane, which leads up from Curbar village, gives level, easy access to the Edge. It does involve a walk of about 150 yards, but last time we were there we followed a lady with her leg in plaster, walking on crutches, and she managed it without difficulty. Once through the gate, veer left and you're straight onto the Edge, with glorious views.
Hope you get fit again soon.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all the ideas and well wishes - there is plenty for me to go at there. Some of those roads I know very well and others less so, so it'll be good to explore new places!
@Digicammad - great photo. That inspires me to get there soon and have a go.
@Nick W - funny you should say that. I'm in the process of putting together a small and cheap home studio for exactly that reason. A 2nd hand table found at a charity shop is being delivered on Wednesday, I have a few gooseneck desk lamps to light things with and some black and white muslin material for backgrounds. I've never really turned my hand to still life before so it'll be fun trying it out.
@mrswoolybill - I know Curbar well and it's beautiful. Sadly even 150m there and back again is out of the question at present but I'll keep it on the list for part way through the recovery and on a day when my husband can act as my packhorse and lug all my kit around for me ![]()
Thanks again,
Lianna

That road can be fantastic - I drove down there last year in the spring with low light and crisp weather. Unfortunately I had to make an appointment and did not have my camera but I really should get back there.
