Rayment Kirby, the man behind the 5X4 wooden technical camera we review in the buyer's guide section, has emailed to let me know that he's revamped his web site which now includes a workshop for anyone who wants to build or design a large format camera of their own.
For those brave enough to attempt some DIY camera construction you'll find the free guide here: large format workshop.
Since I already have a genuine Thornton Pickard and a clone already to cover 5x4 [I adapted the clone with a spring back slide holder] and half plate, unused for three decades plus, the challenge is to build perhaps a 10x8. ![]()
Then use it with paper for pinhole photography.
The workshop section on Rayment Kirbys' site is full of useful info... but rather than hassle the man himself with silly questions at this early stage does anyone know of any other large format camera plans available or relevant websites?
I have had limited luck trawling through Google.
To any would be DIY camera builders out there.I happened to see in a August copy of AP someone was advertising the fact they could make camera parts. They are precision engineers and can turn your drawings into reality- their words. They say they can do prototypes or small batch production. Just the thing I thought for those of you struggling to make focusing knobs or other bits and pieces for the camera you are making. They operate from Devon and their phone/fax no. is 01769520529. I must add I have nothing to do with the outfit in question.
If you want slides or lenses or indeed camera backs and focusing screens it is worth a trawl through Ebay. I have seen several interesting items there recently. I hope this will be useful
