    Hi,

I had the chance to try the new Leica cameras today, including taking photos with the new Leica M Monochrom (18mp full frame black and white sensor), here are some photos, starting with the base ISO of 320, images where converted from DNG to JPEG with no other changes made apart from cropping...

    Full photo:

Just seen this on the EPZ facebook page - it might be my monitor but is this camera really going to be worth the 6K price tag?

The facebook images are HEAVILY compressed, the original RAW files are around 35mb, the JPEGs between 1mb and 11mb, and facebook around 77kb Smile

I think it's an interesting niche, that some people (if they have the money) will love, and will be able to get some impressive (and potentially unique looking) images from.

I am uploading the full size JPEGs here:
    http://www.ephotozine.com/article/leica-m-monochrom-sample-photos-19223

Although please note, it was a pre-production camera.

Edit: There's also Leica X2 sample photos here:

It would be interesting to see a shot taken with the Leica and the same shot with say a D700 or 800 converted to mono - just to see how much better the Leica is.

Edit - the high res versions do look better.

I've always regarded Leica cameras as appropriate for enthusiastic gentle-folk, so they have to be priced to exclude the common herd.

Higher price just means more desirable, as with cars. Who complains about the price of a Bugatti or a Maybach?

I guess the obvious question is: WHY???

Quote: I guess the obvious question is: WHY???

"As the camera does not "see" colours, says Leica, "every pixel records true luminance values to deliver ‘true' black-and-white images that are significantly sharper than comparable exposures from a camera with a colour-sensitive sensor."

More importantly, what about that Leica S2 in the shot? That whips any DSLR...at a price mind you.

As much as I thought it was a strange direction for Leica I would still love to own one.

Some discussion at photo.net wonders if other manufacturers willl try this, e.g. CSC types, as the R&D is relatively low cost, and their versions would of course be much more affordable.
Assuming the Leica generates enough interest.

I guess about 80% of my work is black and white so it does interest me but the images it produced would have to be really noticeably better for me to have a b/w only camera now. One of the advantages of digital for me is that you don't need a camera with colour and another with b/w film in. But, if the b/w quality was really amazing then I would be tempted, but not at 6k unless I suddenly came into a lot of cash. But I might spend 2/2.5k instead of buying say a D800. But for now I am more than happy with my D700.
