Hi Everyone,
I currently have a Nikon D5000 with the 18-55mm vr lens. this lens is great but i need to expand my creativity. I have £500 to spend and i am into outdoor photography of all kinds. I really would like two more lenses but if i can find one that is great all round that would be good. oh yes, i did think about the nikon 50mm f1.8 prime.
Are you wise thinking about a 50mm prime? I'm sure its a brilliant lens, but its not adding to capability. Quality of output perhaps, but it won't expand the repertoire. You now have a reasonable wide angle to mid range capability, so a bit more wide angle or a short to medium telephoto might do, or a genuine macro capability, depending on your interests?
A few points in favour of the 50mm f/1.8, First the 1.8 capability apart from low light it gives the most amazing DOF effect for creative angle....!
Its small and on a small body makes the camera less obvious for candid situations.
Its cheap for a lens that can deliver very sharp images.
Taking on board your mention of the great outdoors, Something wider might appeal, If you can live with the tendancy of Ultra Wides to distort everything, Especially below 14mm, That said you can obtain some spectacular effects.
In an ideal world, Try and get a camera shop to let you try the wider lens on offer, Good ones are not cheap, So you want to be absolutely sure Ultra wide is for you....![]()
On a personal note I find 18mm more than enough on a DX sensor, With 24 mm being more than enough on an FX sensor....!
