Iv just started out in photography and am still getting to grips with the lighting!!
I want to do a project for a fashion for my portfolio but i cant seem to get my lighting techniques quite right!
Has any one got any tips on how to set up the lights for a real effective image? (the fashion is glamourous dresses and high fashion wear).
Iv tried various set ups, and even bought a DVD to help, but i cant seem to set it up right to get the exact effect i want!!
Any tips appreciated!!!
Iv got access to a studio with 4 main lights, 3 soft boxes, brolly, reflector, snoots, honeycombs etc etc....but iv got a real problem with knowing where to place them!!!!
iv got a few books, but none of which my setups have been particulary successfull bar one or two!!!
If you've already got books with setups this may not be any good, but I find the setups in this book: Photographing People: Portraits, Fashion, Glamour really useful.
The main difference between portrait and fashion is that with fashion you are lighting for the clothes, generally the full body, not just the face. You can use lights to pick out details, e.g. snoots and grids, just remember the clothes are the star of the show, not the model, they're just there to hang them on ![]()
alot of my studio fashion shots these days are done with just one flash with a beauty dish or an octabox - keepin it simple and effective (if you check out many of the 'high end' fashion mags like pop, dazed, tank, wonderland etc they often use very simple setups like this)

A 500 w tungstan light and beauty dish can give fantastic results, dig mine out from time to time.
