Having played around with the restricted Beta of Lightroom 3 for a few months (while continuing to use Lightroom 2 for "proper" work), I finally received the finished version of Lightroom 3 yesterday.

It exceeds my expectations to the extent I am beginning to wonder why I still bother about Photoshop.

Probably the biggest improvement over Lightroom 2, in my eyes, is the whole new way of correcting image distortions. This can be done automatically by setting up profiles for each lens or (probably more useful) by treating images manually. For correcting perspective errors caused by extreme wide-angle lenses, it works amazingly (and amazingly simply) and for correcting the verticals in architecture, etc., it is brilliant.

Currently I am working on the Free Trial download, so I have 30 days to order it from the American Amazon, get it delivered to my son in USA so that he can e-mail me my ID code to make it permanent. (Saving about £15 on the cost of buying the upgrade in UK. Why do Adobe and most other software houses insist on fleecing their UK customers with far higher prices than their American customers???? It's enough to make a Scotsman support England in their World Cup game against USA!!)

Looking forward to getting my copy soon, having worked with the beta version for a while. For me to completely dump Photoshop, though, they'd need to add soft proofing and ways of making complex selections - which I imagine is exactly why they haven't added those features Sad

As an example, here is a shot taken with a Sigma 8mm lens on a D300, firstly uncorrected and secondly corrected in Lightroom 3:

I didn't recrop to give exactly the same field of view, but could have done.

Just looked at buying it - it's more expense to download it than for them to deliver a box of software.
    Strange!

Look on ebay for the legit software. It usually sells for 1/4 to 1/3 less on there.

It may be Pure Dead Brilliant and the video tutorials make it look very impressive but at over £1,000 just for the upgrade ( need a new computer as well ) I think I am sticking with v2.7 for the time being Sad

Bloody Hell. What sort of computer are you needing that will cost £930? (£1000 minus £70 for the Lightroom 3 upgrade). The one I am using is over a year old now but it has an Intel Core 2 Quad CPU, Q6600 @ 2.40 GHz and 4Gb of RAM and Lightroom 3 just flies on it. Admittedly it only has 500 Gb of Hard Disc inside but I have 4 Tb of external storage connected up. I think the basic system box cost me about £190 when I got it and it is certainly man enough for any photographic applications I have needed so far.

....should have added that the PC performance seemed to get even better when I ditched Vista and installed Windows 7.

I'm looking to buy it very soon Smile Does it have a layers feature? That was one of the things I was hoping that lightroom would build into it.

No it does not, Lightroom works in a completely different way to Photoshop or Elements.
