Quote: Can somebody explain in fairly simple terms the reasons as to why / when one should adjust the individual Red, Green, Blue curves.
Thank you for all the replies and explanations.
I get the vibes that the individual Channel curves are more related to colour alterations than actual tone / contrast adjustments.
This is going to take me quite a while to get my head round but now I know what it is used for I can carry on with the experiments ![]()
The option to adjust individual RGB channels really goes hand-in-hand with the new softproofing capability, as there's little point in having that if you can't fine-tune the colour. By hovering the cursor over various parts of the image you can evaluate the colour in conjunction with the RGB percentages underneath the histogram.
Dragging the end-points of the curve along the vertical and horizontal axes is the same as making RGB adjustments in levels - bearing in mind that if a picture is neutral in colour the three RGB channel histograms will look very similar in distribution. So you can do that to adjust shadows and highlights as well as placing points on the curve to adjust specific areas of the image (i.e. mid-tones), should that be required. HTH.
Quote: Sliders which control it in that way are linear, curves are curved, big difference.
I fear that you have forgotten some of your high school maths, Chris.
Altering the values of two or more linear sliders produces a curve.
Think of the Tone Curve where, for example, altering the "Lights" and "Darks" linear sliders will produce an "S"-curve.
The movement of any point on a curve, in any direction, can be expressed as linear shifts on two axes.
However, we are both being pedantic. There is no harm in having more than one method of achieving similar results.

The website Luminous Landscape have announced details of their LR 4 Tutorials for pre-order. ( At a discounted price
)
They will not be released before LR 4 is officially released by Adobe
New this version is an additional Advanced Tutorial which covers just the new features in LR 4
For anyone new to Lightroom I can thoroughly recommend LL's video tutorials so pop over to their website and take a peek ![]()
Does anyone know whether a second Beta version will be distributed before a final version is released?
Also, I find it surprising that Adobe have not yet contacted Beta downloaders to ask whether any bugs have been found or to receive other comments. It does make me wonder whether the Beta release is genuinely an evaluative exercise or merely a marketing ploy to generate interest in v.4 before it hits the market.

Unless there are major problems the Final version is due for release by 31st March.
I guess, therefore, that Adobe may not release another Beta version... but you never know ![]()
Are you having problems with the current Beta ?
If so I sugest that you post a comment on the relevant Lightroom 4 Beta Forum
Adobe will not be contacting the Beta downloaders individually but do encourage feedback, even to the extent in requesting that if you have particular problems to send them the RAW files for further investigation.
In fact, one of the top Lightroom Team Engineers, Eric Chan, has stated that following comments etc. he will be changing / tweaking a few things.
Luminous Landscape is also another top website for Lightroom matters with the likes of Jeff Schewe, Andrew Rodney & yes, that guy Eric Chan commenting / advising on a regular basis.
So I suggest you pop over to those sites and take a peep ![]()

Apparently these are the "magic" behind the new enhanced Processing features of LR 4 ( and the next version of Adobe Camera RAW ).
As Tom Hogarty suggests in his blog... perhaps not for everyone but having had a quick look I will certainly be taking a more detailed look at the "papers" in due course.
Even if the technical side is hard going, the image comparisons are quite interesting, confirming what I have been seeing during my trial of LR 4 BETA.
I am sure it did work initially.
Let me try again !

Edit
I am confused... the original link now seems to be OK.... perhaps there was a temporary problem ![]()
