I have recently been fortunate enough to be able to buy a 1D mK1V. Up until now I have only used Elements 8 and Capture One to process images. Elements 8 does not support the raw files from the Mk 1V so perhaps it is time to upgrade to a more powerful image editor.
So which is best. I have seen some negative comments on here about Lightroom 3 but would welcome constructive opinion regarding the merits and disadvantages of both.
Thanks in advance.
Gary
(This very same - nay, identical - question was asked just last week... ** sigh **)
Team..???? Do you have any 'stats' on how often the site 'Search' function is used..???
Must have missed that thread, so out of interest what does Lightroom offer for RAW editing that CS5 doesn't?
Oh, I just wondered why Coleslaw would use it for RAW conversion over CS5?

Can't you just process the raws in Capture One ?
Personally I really like Lightroom - the library and export functionality save me loads of effort. The Adobe Raw converter is Ok - I tend to prefer the results from C1 though.
I've recently started shooting RAW and I've tried using both Lightroom and Capture1 to process them and I much prefer Lightroom as it seems to offer a lot more control over the results and as Chris says, the export function's useful.
I've also got CS5 but I've yet to try converting files using it.
As for moving up from Elements (of any kind) to CS5, you'll see a huge difference in what you can achieve. As Cole has suggested, it's the best.
And don't forget, there was an offer passing through these forums recently whereupon you could download and instal a copy of the lastest version of C1 for nothing. That's how I got mine! I don't know if it's still valid but it might be worth trying to find it.
Quote: Lightroom and CS5 both use exactly the same RAW converter - Adobe Camera RAW.
Absolutely right.....![]()
Lightroom 3 is a pretty good all round program, A lot more functionality than the basic Capture One option, Though as pointed out some prefer the way Cap One delivers raw translation...!!!
That said, Pretty much all the Canon bods seem to rate the Canon DPP program for better results when working with Canon Raw Files, Whats more its free and comes with your camera...![]()
So use the free Canon DPP program to convert Raw to Tiff ( or whatever ) then continue using whatever editing program you like thereafter.....!!!
Just to reinforce what has already ben said, For RAW data handling, Both Photoshop CS5 & Lightroom 3 use the very same ACR ( Adobe Camera Raw ) engine, So from that point there is NO difference, However the LR " Interface " is a matter of getting used to.
Lastly you could use Adobes " DNG " convertor to convert your RAWs to DNG, Then work in whatever programs are capable of using DNG.
Whatever.....
