A lady friend of mine has bought a Sigma 500mm lens with the aim of photographing birds. The lens is great but it is heavy and she now needs a lightweight and easy to use tripod and head. Any recommendations?

    tripod or mono pod?

try this site: Manfrotto Tripod and head chooser

I would say a mono pod really if she wants real light weight, you can pick up a carbon fibre one for £100 or so.

She has a monopod but now wants a tripod for setting up in hides etc. I was kinda hoping there would be a direct recomendation from a wildlife photographer! Sad

Heavy lens + light tripod = disaster.

The tripod and head combination needs to be capable of supporting the total weight of the equipment and many of the lighter tripods simply can not do this. So before purchasing be sure to check the max weight ratings.
