My new Dlux5 has arrived and so far very impressed with the camera , nice feel , good layout , will take a bit of getting used to the setup of everything compared to my 5d2 but thats to be expected.
The actual picture quality in raw is good and with a little work in lightroom produces some very good results ( lightroom comes free with the camera !! ) , the jpeg quality again is very good , will be putting it through its paces over the next few weeks but for now here a shpt from yesterday , ISO80 @F8.

Nice.
As a matter of interest, what made you opt for the Leica-badged version (made by Panasonic) rather than the genuine Panasonic version at much less cost? Either way, it gets good reviews but I am puzzled about the badging affecting the price so much.
Andy - I didn't mean to rubbish your purchase and I'm sorry if it came across that way. The opposite is true - I'm genuinely chuffed you love your new camera. I'd love to have a Leica myself.
More over I was just wanted to stress that no company ever gives you something for nothing. Part of the price you paid was for the licence of the software.
Enjoy your camera.
Adam
Aesthetically it is a gorgeous little camera, though all this talk of it costing so much, i was a trifle surprised when i saw the average RRP of around the £560 mark, so not really expensive at all, not for a Leica. Is a nice bit of kit though i have to say, im sure you will have many happy hours of fun with it ![]()
Quote: now I have one
Nope! Now you have a Panasonic...
But now you own a Leica badge, You can start saving up for a real Leica.....![]()
Good luck....![]()
At least, Cameracat, everyone knows that the Leica DLux5 is simply a Panasonic LX5 with a red dot.. What I find much more worrying, from a consumer protection point of view, is all the other Panasonic cameras that claim to have "Leica" lenses when, in fact, those lenses are also made by Panasonic.
Some people (obviously not savvy, educated folk on this forum) do think that the Name "Leica" means that the camera or lens is manufactured by Leica in Europe when it is really made by Panasonic (or one of their subcontractors) in the Far East.
Fine all points taken into consideration but this is my view ....
Quote taken from Leica's website
"The D-Lux 5 is a true Leica, not only in terms of its elegant design but also in its superior optical performance: The result are images of excellent quality."
1.I am afraid there is no-one on here qualified to take on the Leica coproration, if you feel you can then by all means feel free. ( forum comments are opinions and just that )
2.There is no documented evidence that the two cameras are the same and once again no one on here has provided anything of such, just a load of hot air.
3.It has a Leica badge on it, it is therefore a Leica camera.
4. Leica and Panasonic are not stupid and to claim they are from a consumer protection view is naive and just sensationalism, they cant make claims they cant back up.
If anyone has a sensible comment and actual evidence than i will be happy to hear it , but so far this is the best compact camera I have ever used and fully deserves the Leica badge and heritage no matter which part of the world it is made in. It doesnt have to be made in a certain place to be a Leica they can make them wherever they leica ![]()
Anybody thinking of purchasing then I have no hesitation in recommending this camera after my initial few hours of use and will report back with more detailed info if anyones interested.
I think it's fair to say te Leica is based on the Panasonic. But (from the Steve Huff site):
"The Leica D-Lux 5 will give you different firmware, different body style and looks, a 3 year warranty, and better software. I am hearing Lightroom will be included, which is a GOOD thing."
It's a bit like Hasselblad using Fuji for it's lenses. Instead of bickering about names attached, what is wrong with embracing a fellow photographer's new purchase and encouraging them to show what results they can achieve!! Or does it worry you that they may get one or two more votes than you? I thought that photography was all about capturing a moment in time or is it all about sucking up to others and praising there work when in reality a 5yr old with a £50 camera could have done better job than a lot of the 30+ vote shots i have seen. p.s Sorry pulsar69 but I needed to get that off my chest. I hope it helps the negative opinion's out there change there minds.
