This should help you with your mac

Cathy, you're a Mac owner now. Don't clean out the junk, the forgotten images, the old scratch files. When it's so full of junk it slows down and you run out of space you go to the Apple Store. You give them more of your money for a new one. Simples Smile

Sorry Cathy I've seen it now. I was on a friend's Mac and because one of us was wearing a light-coloured shirt I couldn't see the text clearly on the reflective screen. Wink

Cathy, can I seriously suggest you get hold of a free utility called Onyx here:-
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/11582/onyx.

Make sure you get the correct version, depending on what version of the OS you are using.

It's a marvellous little program that will do the basic cleaning for you and it's free, unlike Clean My Mac (which is also very good).
Run Onyx about once a month, and clean out browser caches about once a week.

Other than that there is very little maintenance required, especially if you leave your Mac on overnight once in a while - the system runs automatic maintenance routines called 'cron' files during the night, including some basic de-fragging.

Happy to help again if needed.

Oh, and Chris_L......please get a life! (nothing personal you understand).

Quote: I have not used time machine either, as I normally just backup my photos manually on my external hard drives.
I think I need to learn more about it.

You just plug in an external hard drive, open up Time machine & off it goes - like everything else it just does it!! Then it just backs up when you are working on the mac without you knowing anything about it at all. Nothing TO learn - Bliss!

Perhaps you should now try restoring a few files at random..... just to check that the back-up worked OK ?

Lou it's absolutely hilarious that you think that's unique to the Mac Grin
