I bought a Fuji S602 last year and have had a major problem with it malfunctioning (and thus being inoperable) and and want to know if anyone else has experienced the same - or can suggest how I can get Fuji to properly fix my camera as it has been sent back to them once and I am still experiencing exactly the same problem again. This is despite it only being sent back to me from Fuji's repair department a 3 weeks ago with a note saying nothing was wrong with it.
The problem with the camera began after I'd had it only 2 months and seemed to be fine until one day it basically shut down the shoot mode whilst I was using it (LCD went on briefly then went black). The mode to view photos already taken worked for a brief while but then malfunctioned too - on LCD on for a few seconds went black. Basically camera froze up and once this has happened it does not work again. Batteries are not the problem as I have investigated this thoroughly (eg changed batteries, tried several different brands etc).
Fuji had it for 4 wks and returned it saying nothing wrong - but after only a few uses over a 3 week period it is behaving the same as when I sent it to them before. I am having the same problems (camera freezing and shutting down certain modes) and the only way to fix it is to send it to Fuji yet again as it is impossible to get it to work. I feel I have been sold a dud camera and am not happy as I paid over 500 for a camera that is not reliable, and will need to be sent away yet again for the same fault that Fuji don't seem to believe exists.
What can I do? Where do I stand legally if my camera is a dud? How can I get Fuji to satisfactorly fix my camera or replace it - or is this up to the retailer I bought it from? I'd really appreciate any help as feeling a bit desperate and frustrated by the situation. Is there a consumers rights group/department I could contact to find out my rights regarding what I can do about the camera if Fuji continue to ignore that the camera has a fault and don't fix it properly.
thanks,
Sally
"In the unlikely event of your equipment requiring repair during the manufacturers guarantee, please contact the dealer or supplier from whom it was purchased. Where this is not possible, please contact the telephone listed below."
For general product repairs, please ring: 01234.218388
As quoted on the guarantee retainer slip.
It looks as though you are expected to return it via the dealer from who you purchased it from.
Hope this helps. Dave
Sally, I posted this on DigitalCameraMag forum yesterday, in reply to your post:
For your information, I had another Fuji model, the 6800z, which packed up without warning. Fortunately for me, it was still under warranty. The camera locked up completely when I switched it on, the lens came out as it normally did, then it died. There was nothing I could do to get it working again.
I took it back to the shop, and they sent it back to Fuji for repair. The camera was absolutely immaculate, but when it came back from Fuji, it had been re-assembled out of alignment, and I had a permanent black spot on the LCD. The camera was working again, but I wasn't happy with the state it was in.
So, I wrote a letter of complaint to the retailer, who replaced the camera with another model. Lucky for me, but I guess not everyone is so lucky, or is prepared to stand their ground.
Your first port of call should be the retailer, assuming you bought it new.
If you got the camera from a reputable retailer, then go back to them, and if you have no joy then write them a letter, telling them that no way should you be paying 600 or so for a camera which doesn't work and is unreliable. It's a lot of money to fork out for something which doesn't last, and the S602 is still a current model after all. With luck, they might change it for you.
Another course of action might be to write to Fuji's head office and tell them that even after you had the camera sent of to be repaired by Fuji, it still doesn't work, and that you have no faith in their repairs department - after all, you did give it over to them, and they failed to carry out the repair. But ultimately, in terms of consumer law, your claim is against the retailer.
Also, bear in mind that your statutory rights do *not* expire after one year, but that the retailer does have an obligation for five years. You are entitled to either a repair, or some form of "compensation", but not necessarily a new replacement. Do some research on the net, and you'll find the info.
Stand your ground, this is not a cheap camera, and for the money you've paid out, it should last a lot longer.
Sally,
Is this not covered by the 'Sale of Goods Act' which states that goods must be of merchantable quality and if they are not then the retailer must refund or replace. The basic contract is between you and the retailer and the onus is on the retailer to make you happy.Dont be put off even if its outside the 1 year guarantee period as the Small Claims Court have uphelp claims where goods have failed after 12 months on the basis that if the goods had been of merchantable quality then they could reasonably be expected to last longer than 12 months. Your local Citzens Advice Bureau should be able to help.
All the Best
Andy
My S602 is about 3 months old now and I've just received an invitation for an extended warranty.
They want 94 for 2 years and 149 for 4 years. From what I've read here, and in other threads, the 2 year warranty is a tempting offer.
I wouldn't go for the 4 year 'cos technology would have moved on a lot by then and I could probably pick up a similar spec for much less.
What's the opinion of yooo'se guys??
Hi Toymaker - I didn't go for the guarantee and have just paid 80.00 for a repair on the Fuji 6900z - upgrading to the S602 was thought about before the repair was necessary and Jessops offered 250 on a camera which cost 699.00 from them 16 months ago, reasonable or what ?
Hi Toymaker
There maybe semantics involved here but my 602 gives me a standard 12 months guarantee/warranty with a complete replacement camera should anything go kaput within this period. This seems to be the norm with digicams here and Iassumed this would apply in Europe too!
An extended warranty ,in most cases ,is offered by the retailer
Cheers! Mike

OK, there seems to be some confusion here. What I've been sent is an extended protection plan which extends the protection after the initial 12 month guarantee expires.
It says "Thank you for . . . which comes with a full one year guarantee. We are delighted to offer you the opportunity to take out a breakdown insurance plan which has the effect of extending your one year guarantee to 3 or 5 years in total".
As I understand it this plan kicks in after the manufacturer's warranty expires. They've just been a bit quick off the mark.
Gotcha Toymaker
Geriatry strikes me again!What
I was discussing earlier was returning cams for repairs whilst still under warranty then somehow we merged into extended warranties which I presume will be offered to me soon also! Kylie suffers from the "tall poppy syndrome" which is pretty rampant here ,maybe thats why she wiggles "it" mostly in the UK these days!
Cheers Mike
