Yes. Indeed, it is an advantage to be able to keep using the same heads, QR plates and other attachments even if you change the brand of the base tripod. I wish I could fins a way of attaching my Manfrotto heads to my Slik88 tripod though. Anyone got a fix for that combination?
I use a Manfrotto ball head on a Slik88 tripod and Kennet monopod using these:

That's what I can't do, Mike.
I can remove the head assembly from the platform at the top of the column, but I can't remove the platform from the column. There isn't any threaded post onto which a "normal" head could be screwed.
Manfrotto sell a 1/4" female to 3/8" male adapter - would this do the trick?
