Metering modes on my 5DmkIII

Having pretty much always used evaluative metering, I was surprised to find that any other metering mode constantly meters as I recompose an image, once I've half pressed the shutter to set focus. Is this normal behaviour? It seemed strange that Spot especially, lost the metering for the spot Id focused on? I guess I need to use exposure lock?

Metering will constantly change unless you lock it.

If your Canon is anything like my Nikon, you should have menu options that allow you to set the functions of all the buttons. In particular, you should be able to program the half shutter release button press to either lock focus only or lock focus and exposure.

I know a lot of photographers that use the shutter button to lock exposure and use AF-Lock on the back to focus. I personal couldn't get used to it so focus with shutter button and lock exposure with the little "*" button. Keep it help and it will hold the exposure as long as you need.
