As you may (or may not) have seen from this thread, I am about to take a step into the unknown.......... into the world of Micro 4/3 systems! Smile

This is a new type of system camera which only appeared in the UK a couple of years or so ago. I thought it might be interesting to get a discussion going on the subject and, perhaps, consider in due course whether the EPZ forum might benefit from having a separate section for M4/3 (all makes) - as they do on the DPReview forum.

So, to kick things off perhaps M4/3 owners might like to say:

    (1) What camera do you have?
    (2) What lenses do you have - including the make? (One of the perceived advantages is that you can put a Panasonic lens on an Olympus and vice versa)
    (3) Do you own a DSLR?
    (4) Do you own a compact?
    (5) If the answer to (3) and/or (4) is yes, do you see yourself, ultimately, dropping the use of the other camera in favour of M4/3? With your reasons either way.

With promises, for the future, of high-quality glass from the likes of Carl Zeiss and Schneider-Kreuznach, together with the rumours of an imminent "pro" M4/3 from Olympus things could get very interesting. Also, I read a statistic that M4/3 already, in a mere 2 years, accounts for about 12% of sales of cameras with interchangeable lenses; this is quite an achievement for a completely new design in the fairly conservative system camera market.

So, whether or not you own an M4/3 camera:

    (6) Do you think we could - at long last - be seeing the retirement, in a few years time, of the SLR design which has been with us for so many decades?

    1. Sony NEX 3
    2. Kit lens 18 - 55?
    3. Nikon D300
    4. No
5 + 6 Yes I do the Sony image quality and ISO is easily on parr with my Nikon. The shutter lag is almost as good, the next generation will start to replace cheap SLR's.
I boughy my Sony instead of a compact as a take everywhere camera but still produce quality images.

    1 Olympus Pen
    2 14-40 kit lens + 20mm f1.7 Panasonic pancake lens
    3 Canon 5DII, Canon 550D
    4 No - that's why I bought the Olympus
5 No - the M4/3 is for convenience. It's a good compromise for size and quality, but at present the quality doesn't rival the larger sensors with better glass [I have mainly higher range Canon lenses - I don't enjoy the prices and if 3rd parties offered reasonable competition competition I wouldn't care about the label].

6 Difficult to say. Logic would suggest if pixel count/noise control carried on in the same direction it may be possible. But it is hard to see how the smaller form factors could offer the same range of control and quality in optics and depth of field control. Who knows? I don't think it's a foregone conclusion, but it's an attractive proposition.

A lot of these user`s all ready own Canon or Nikon and there not exactly changing brands, just expanding there system.

I 4/3 I still have the E1, the E3 and there camera that started all this, the E330.

The future does look interesting rumours of a pro range for Olympus, and rumours of Fuji producing an x100 type body with interchangeable lenses, lol they could even jump on the M4/3 band wagon, wishful thinking Smile

And pretty much anything else CB Smile

I have a bag full of old glass.

Thanks for the comments guys - I should, of course, have answered my own questions. Lol! Grin

    (1) Olympus Pen E-PL2 (well, I will by Friday!)
    (2) Olympus 14-42 II and 40-150 (bought as as kit with camera)
    (3) Yes - Panasonic TZ10
    (4) Yes - Canon 5D Mk II
    (5) Just possibly. Compact may get ditched. Not sure about the DSLR (currently loaned out).
    (6) Hmm... not sure. The SLR is a familiar old workhorse of a design - it's been with us for 50+ years now. It will probably take a lot for older photographers to abandon the SLR. Younger ones who have never owned a camera with an optical viewfinder may be more susceptible to bypassing the SLR in favour of what seem to be called 'ILC' or 'EVIL' cameras.

Yes, it seems you can use pretty much any old lens with the M4/3 cameras - even Leica M lenses. This may help to increase their popularity. Does the use of the adaptor affect the angle of view in any way?

Quote: as reviewers go he`s quite funny

Thanks I'd already seen them. I think he has quite a following! Grin

    (1) GH1
    (2) Heaps - I think I have 4 adapters, and the only lenses I can't really use are Canon Eos because there is no aperture control.
    (3) Yes
    (4) Yes
    (5) No chance. They make a set. GH1 sits nicely in the middle.
    (6) Unlikely. We might see some resurgence of rangefinders though.

    Lenses it normally lives with
    Pentax TV lens25/1.4
    Industar 69 28/2.8
    Industar 61 55/2.8
    Jupiter 11 135/4
    Angenieux 17-68/2.2

It also has an Apollo 135/1.8 TV lens in M42, but its too big and heavy for general use.

As I usually use some Contax manual lenses on my DSLR, and my livelihood doesn't usually depend on DSLR photography, the GH1 is adequate as a lightweight back up, and also as a good cine camera, using the same lenses, albeit as a half frame body.

    1. Panasonic G2 & GF1
    2. Panasonic 20. f1.7, 14-45, 45-200.
    3. Canon 5D.+ L lenses
    4. Canon G12.
    5. the quality of M4/3 for me is enough for my needs, lugging around heavy kits for travel is no fun. I certainly don't see the end of SLR's in the near future, but the way technology is improving theres bound to be some changes sooner or later.

    1-Olympus Pen E-PL1
    2-Zuiko 14-42.
    3-D300.
    4-Very old, 3 megapixal Canon.
5-Yes, the Canon, as good as it is for an old 3 megapixal compact, I needed/wanted something small and relatively light to fit in my handbag!
6-Can't see the end of DLSR in the very near future. I think people like the feel of the larger size camera body, plus, I think a 500mm lens on such a small
body would not only look odd, but probably feel odd too.

E-P1 with 14-42 plus all my Nikkors from 10.5 to 400mm - both G and AI.

The MFT G adaptor even allows aperture control too...

Mega-happy with the whole concept and package CB

    FTIW.

    Hi Mike,

I can only see how to set my E-P1 to 3200 ISO. Where do I find how to get 6400 please?

From what I understand Auto ISO is up to 3200, manual ISO is up to 6400.

How you set things I have no idea Sad

    Mike ?
