There are many alternatives that can import/export in to mpp format. If a mac user try Merlin - about half the price of MS Project.
There are also some now available on the cloud - saas. Worth checking them out.
Only reason I know is that I had a similar dilemma in that a customer was sending me mpp files and I needed to find a way to read them on the mac. Beware though and always use the trial period if one is available as I found some to be unreliable in the way that they imported the files.
There are a few free excel add ons and template sheets that might be of use for you. Have a look at http://www.vertex42.com/ExcelTemplates/excel-project-management.html for instance. I also use this and MS Project at work.
