I'm looking for software that displays options for laying out multiple photo arrangements within a frame, allowing the user to choose the best layout and sizing selection. I have seen such software in use at a studio a while back but I've no idea what it is called and what software options are available. Can anyone advise please?

It sounds as though a desktop publishing application would meet your needs. Try a free download of Serif PagePlus from Serif.com. Select the Free Download tab.

Once you have got your blank page you "Insert Picture from file". Once your picture is selected drag it across the page. It resizes on the fly, you can move it, crop etc. Once in place Insert another image and so on. You can also add text. It is very versatile and will cost you nothing.
