Hello everyone!!!
Need help... maybe a silly issue but I can't get it through by my self... I bought a second hand Canon lens 24-105 macro 1:4 L IS USM and in spite my Rebel XTi is off the lens makes a USM sound that goes off until I turn it on and press the shutter half way but when I try to take the pic it goes err99 and displays error information... some people told me to clean contacts though nothing different happens... should I throw it away?
Any suggestion or piece of advice? thank you anyway!!!
Try changing the battteries, swaping the card and cleaning the lens-camera connections to start with.
Lens failure is a common cause of ERR99, set the camera to aperture priority and set the aperture on the camera body to as wide as it goes. If the camera now takes a picture with no error codes then the issue is the aperture on the lens is not reacting correctly. Probably why it was sold.
Make sure that the " Firmware " in your camera is up todate.....!
There are many forum posts around the web, Some suggest that the problems surrounding some ERR99 issues stem from battery voltage readings within the camera system, Apparently exacerbated by lens that require more power to operate.
What happens is that when voltage levels are at a critical point, They can dip into a lower reading by the camera system, This then throws up an ERR99, Which is really a jack of all trades fault indication.
Therefore cleaning contacts etc may not help, But its always a good starting point.
I was told by my brother, who works in IT, that the best way to clean equipment contacts of any sort (he demonstarted on a SIM card for his cellphone) is with a pencil eraser. Obviously if you do this, you'll have to be VERY careful about getting any shavings inside the camera, if only to stop sensor spots.
I had a similar problem with my 400D and (brand new) Sigma 18-125 OS - kept throwing up error 99 - the OS motor kept buzzing even with the OS switched off - seems like I got a bad copy, now got a Canon 18-135 IS instead which performs much better. Could be the OP has a bad copy of the 24-105 which is an outstanding lens usually - have had one on my 5D for 12 months without a hitch and have shot a lot of images with it.
Thank you all very much!!! I tried the pencil eraser thing and the lens started to work well; though, when I change it and put it back again the problem continues as long as I turn my eos on, then it works as expected!!! Think I got it for a cleaning and general revision. But thank you again for caring and your fast answer!!! I got the battery issue in mind too...
