My new camera should be here in 2-4 hours and it is hard to wait. Well I would like to here from the K5 owners how much they like it now that they bought it. And what short commings it has that I should look for. Thanks FatsclarkGrin

Well its a nice camera, So they probably will love it.....Grin Probably far to busy taking pictures to comment as yet.....Smile

Quote: And what short commings it has that I should look for

Now pardon me for pointing this out, But if your looking for short comings in a product, The time for doing so is " Before " you hit the " Buy Now " button.....Wink

Whatever, Just looking at the specs, Checking out a few reviews, Including the one linked to above, I'd say the new Pentax K5 is going to be a sure fire winner for Pentax users, There is nothing much under £2000 squid that can touch it, The sensor matches some of the very best from rival manufacturers, Both Crop & Full frame models too..!!!!

I doubt it will persuade Canon or Nikon users to jump ship, Well not yet anyhow, If Pentax hit the streets with a couple of sensibly priced Full Frame options, That might well change the tide a little, Sony had better watch out, Their third place could be under threat though......Grin

Its great to see Pentax back in the frame, Lets face it Pentax is a name that is synonymous with camera/lens & all thing photography, Unlike a few other pretenders out there..!!!

Green with Envy, its got such good ISO cabability I've added you to my fav photographers as i can't wait to see some real images. if you want a subject hint its anyone in a dark location, candlelit meal/pub in the evening/party/event etc where you would normally need flash. But with ISO512000 you shoulf be able to take intimate group images on a 17-55mm lens in dull lights above 1/50th sec - i hope.
If i had a spare grand or so i'd be going just what you've done. Happy shooting Rick.

    Cheers

Well gentleman I played with it yesterday in the green mode ( auto everything ) and had a ball. This morning I got out my 30 year old Kiron 28-105>3.2 and 70-210>4 and figured out how to go all manual and set the camera to use aperture, went through the house just taking pictures of what ever.
And I am here to tell you that handheld and manual the pictures are just stunning for an old man with the shack's.
I have 11 lense real good glass and metal bodies, heavy lenses that I collected back in the 70's and 80's, so for all my landscape pic's I have the glass for it. I won't have to buy any glass this year.
Thanks for reading and I hope you see your way into a K5 it is fun!!! Fat'sGrinGrinGrin

Both the Sony A580 and A55 have the same sensor and they're both available at under £600.

But then they are not in the same market point on the other features such as metal body AF system etc. Perhaps when Sony get around to releasing the A700 replacement there will be a suitable comparison camera from Sony.

If you want to you can compare Sensor performance look here and you can select the A55 as well to join the party. Serious pixel peeping at serious ISO leaves me thinking the sensor wars are over despite what DXO says Smile So now lets enjoy cameras for their performance as photo taking things.

still congratulations to Pentax as it sounds like they have produced a good camera that more than stands on its own two feet against the 7D and D300s. I hope they get some decent market share as a result. Just what Pentax owners have been asking for, nice one. Smile

To the original poster I hope you enjoy your new camera.

Sorry SM, but the Pentax AF system in the predecessor to the K5 was well known to be about the worst available. I'm sure the K5 is a hell of a lot better but you're making a bit of a leap of faith to say that it's AF is going to be better than the Sony's (which get excellent reviews). I would seriously doubt that it's better - except it may have a million AF points which IMO you can keep. A metal body is not worth paying extra for - for most amateurs anyway. You say they're not in the "same market point" but basically an amateur wants the best image quality he can for the price plus the features he needs. The Sony A580 seems to have all the features any amateur would need. The only complaint I've read is that it doesn't have MLU, which most people don't need. Basically for anyone to say that there's "not much under £2000 to touch" the K5 is slightly ridiculous when you can get the same pictures from cameras costing under £600.

Excellent link strawman - The extra ISO for me is about getting a fun evening shot at a party vs not getting it as its too blurry. This shot won't win awards but should record the atmosphere and allow for fun memories.
This K5 and a Pentax smc DA 40mm f/2.8 40mm could be just the ticket.

I can get good available light shots with my K10D and the 1980's 50mm f1.4 Pentax-M lens off my LX Pentax so I don't feel like any 'GAS' coming on !

For Thincat, I would give Pentax the chance to see some decent AF performance tests before calling a decision. As for metal body well I have a metal body camera at that price point, so why not?? In all the tests I have seen the Sony's you mention have average AF performance, I have not seen any claims of excellent performance. So there is a fair chance that Pentax have better AF performance than the cameras you mention, as it should it costs more. Then there is handling and user features.

And if image quality per £ is your aim please do not call up the Canon 550D results as it costs less than the Sony's and turns in a very similar result (perhaps better depends on your criterion). Pentax also offer lower cost models and as I said I think too much is made of sensor differences these days, all the brands have stepped up to a very similar performance for a sensor size/pixel density. To be fair the Sony's you mention are more 550D and Pentax K-r competition.

Quote: A580 seems to have all the features any amateur would need The only complaint I've read is that it doesn't have MLU, which most people don't need.

Well I use mirror lock up and off actual sensor liveview. I also use two control wheels and the top panel LCD as it helps as does having ISO in the viewfinder... Often it is the little touches that make a camera cost more. Its like a friend of mine has a Corsa and to him it is all the car he ever needs, it does all he wants. And that is fine for him, but it does not mean that the luxury saloon class, or sports car categories no longer have a value. just because his chosen brand is not active in those areas.

Quote: Basically for anyone to say that there's "not much under £2000 to touch" the K5 is slightly ridiculous when you can get the same pictures from cameras costing under £600.

well yes perhaps its a bit optimistic but its his new camera etc and its been a long time coming so I expect Pentax users to be excited just like you would expect Sony users to get excited if they ever get around to releasing the A700 replacement within a few years of the A700 becoming a distant memory in the shops. And is it not good to hear that Pentax has put out a camera that competes head on with the 7D and D300, possibly is the better camera. Nikon and Canon have been without competition at this point for too long. So why not let the guy who just bought a new Pentax have a moment of thinking he bought the best camera. He may well be correct, or not Smile But for him it may well be true.

I would certainly hope that the K5 is a load better than the D300, which is now well over 3 years old and was basically comparable - in all features and performance - to the now obsolete Sony A700. Sensor performance and AF performance has moved on.

I think your analogy with cars is a dodgy one. Cars are a status symbol in a way that cameras aren't - except among a very small number of anoraks. I've ordered an R8 to replace my Merc, which has been the most unreliable car I've ever owned and now, just out of warranty, is going rusty. In many ways it will be a very impractical car for the country lanes where I live, but I don't care. With cameras, though, it's just a straightforward calculation - does it have the features I need and has it got the best IQ I can get. I don't care what it looks like or the name on the front.

My quote of the week, sorry had to go dry my eyes 1st before replying. For those of you without live webcam's Strawman has been rolling on the floor like those robots from the Cadburies smash advert. Of course you do not that is why you moan about anyone saying anything good about any brand other than Sony. Go back read your posts in this thread alone.
