Have mentioned this elsewhere but I'm still buzzing from it. I had a full page photo published in the Sun yesterday.

    Link Here

They used my photograph of the forensic team on the website, and they put a portrait cropped from the left hand side as a full page. I'm happy and looking forward to celebrating properly when I (eventually) get a cheque.

    :o)

Congratulations. It's a pity it concerns such a tragic story.

Not something i would want to be shouting about if i am honest

Andy, It's a photograph and it has been published in a paper that sells 3 million copies a day. I went out that morning to do a job and it was obviously a good one. Of course I'm proud of that, why wouldn't I be? I put a lot of hard work into trying to build my career and so yes, having it selected for use in britains biggest selling paper is quite an achievement. Just like my coverage of the flooding in Northumberland was last September. And just like the photograph I had published to accompany a success story in a Diabetes magazine.

Thanks for the congratulations spaceman, I do agree that they are tragic circumstances and I am not making light of that in any way.

A lot of effort and sacrifice has gone into getting this far and the only measure of how "successful" I am is when an editor chooses my image over thousands of others each day and puts it in print. That is after all what is going to pay the bills.

Not a nice story Martin but like you say you have worked hard to get to this point and it pays your bills well done mate

    Regards

    Carl

The picture is pretty tame, and by that I mean it is not of the body or anything. Even if they were I wouldn't really see a problem. They are classic newspaper pictures. Not that interesting but accompany the story well. I would be bloody happy if I had managed to sell them to the Sun. So well done Martin you should be proud of doing what you do well.

Martin's done nothing wrong. Tragic events happen and they're reported in the news - and it's somebody's job to do the reporting. It's just that after reading such a dispiriting story few people will feel in a "well done!" sort of mood.

I wasn't being nasty or sarcastic, just trying to understand the vibe, I suppose it must be good to see an image you captured circulated.. just it involves somebodies death, which perhaps could deserve more compassion... (?)

Good work Martin. If it wasn't for people like you doing shots like this we wouldn't have the news...and I'm pretty sure most people buy papers to look at news. Agreed it's not a happy moment, but how many of those who crit something like this would not look at the news and the images?

is it the image or the celebration of it that has caused a stir?

Ive covered many news stories in my time Lockerbie being the first.
Ive never had the urge to announce the fact on websites or celebrate when the cheque arrived.

Was there a website to announce it on back in 1988?

Thanks to those of you who have read this as it was meant to be.

To those of you that are implying that I am some way overjoyed by the loss of the life of a man who was going through a very difficult time, you really don't know me well enough to make such implications. And I really don't see the need to defend or explain myself any further.

It's funny, but actually local friends, some of whom knew the person and the town haven't felt the need to criticise and have offered a "well done for getting a photograph in the paper. I guess that's because they know me.

MODS - please can you delete this thread as it's obviously going to slip further and further in the wrong direction. I will be sure to only announce when I have a happy image in print, one that I gave to a local church group for free.

You still won't win Martin! Someone will come along and say you're undermining the profession by giving images away even though it's in a good cause ..

I know where you're coming from with this and yes it's an achievement so well done. You're not being ghoulish about it or celebrating the event.

I wonder how many photographers were pleased when their photographs of Diana's funeral were published ..
