Ever since I was a young’un I’ve considered the National Geographic magazine an example of first rate photography and travel writing. I was looking at their website with a view to submitting some travel shots to their on-line gallery......................... and then I read the Ts&Cs!
This is para 5:
5. You retain all of your ownership rights in material you upload, comments you post, or other content you provide to the Site (“User Content”). By uploading User Content, however, you grant National Geographic (which includes its subsidiaries, affiliates, joint venturers, and licensees) the following rights: a royalty-free, worldwide, perpetual license to display, distribute, reproduce, and create derivatives of the User Content, in whole or in part, without further review or participation from you, in any medium now existing or subsequently developed, in editorial, commercial, promotional, and trade uses in connection with NG Products
So, not only can they (and their subsidiaries, affiliates etc !!) use your image and/or text, they can also ‘create derivatives’ without your consent !!! And yes, I know individuals are free to choose whether or not to accept (I refused) but personally, I think it’s scandalous that a magazine of such stature should have a clause like that; but then I’m probably rather naive!
What got me though is the number of images already in their gallery.
