I'm after a fairly lightweight (no more than 2 kilos) tripod with a ball head.
It will be used with a D200 and a Sigma 10-20mm lens, nothing any bigger.

I have seen a Calumet model wich only comes in about £50.00 inc VAT. I don't really need a super low shooting height but one that can get down pretty low.

    Thanks All Smile

Manfrotto Modo may be worth a look at £49.90 - weighs in at under 1kg and is very compact, the manufacturer states max. load is 2kg (although the supplier recommended 1kg max. load).
I'm impressed with mine so far as it's lightweight enough that I carry it with me more often.
Not sure if this is allowed on this forum but I had magnificent service from 'Aspen of Hereford' via their Ebay shop. I phoned my order to them, the guy I spoke to was helpful (and knew what he was talking about) and the tripod arrived next day with no charge for delivery.

    Depends what your requirements are?

Look at the Velbon sherpa 600R

lightweight, very solid, reversable centre colunm, low level photography with fully adjustable legs, head included £79

    www.velbon-tripod.com/sherpa.htm
This model features a sliding center column which is removable, so that it can be inverted, making a more versatile tripod. Sherpa 600R has a choice of 3 leg angles, allowing the tripod to be operated with maximum stability and giving low level capabilities-down to just 29cm. Other features include a splittable center column to allow near ground level operation and PH-157Q 3-way panhead with Velbon's quick release system and one touch locking of pan and tilt actions.

    available at jessops

Sounds like it has exctly the same features as the Manfrotto - have a look at both.

The Manfrotto Modo isn’t that the one with a squeeze grip, sold as a video and photo tripod.

It has the same features in a roundabout way but its nothing like the Velbon, in fact if you’re not careful with the Manfrotto it would either blow away or you'd snap a leg off in serious photographic conditions.

The difference between the video and photo setting is a gimmick in my opinion. That said it’s your money and you have to use it, plus check the weight of your equipment, as 2kg is nothing. Velbon = 4kg

That is the one - and you're right it is lightweight (980g), this was one of bmx-bandit's requirements.
For me that is one of it's good points, I can easily carry it with me and I rarely use it with the legs fully extended.
It was recently tested in one of the popular magazines (What Digital Camera ??) and was well reviewed. Having said that I haven't seen the Velbon so I can't compare them.
As I said look at both, one or the other may well do the job for you.

The Manfrotto tripods are generally considered to be among the best, although I think the 190 might be a bit over-engineered for what you want.

Their new Modo line is nice - and lightweight yet stable for cameras that aren't massively heavy. www.manfrotto.com/modo/

Also worth looking at the National Geographic tripods that have just come out... www.supporthexperience.com

Otherwise, I know people that have bought Velbon Sherpa's and have been very happy...www.intro2020.co.uk

Probably worth avoiding the imitation stuff from China though - they often look like a bargain, but are more like wobble-pods Smile

I have actually now gat the Manfrotto Digi 725B. I liked the lightweight of the tripod, and although they list it for use with a digi compact the max weight limit is 3.5kg!

I have used it with my D200 and Sigma 10- 20 and it's easily stable enough Smile
