It worked! There must have been traces of grease on the terminals because they looked spotless. But I wiped them down with a small amount of ethanol on cotton wool and focusing is fine in any minimak lighting condition at any zoom setting. Thank you. I should have thought of that, because cleaning is so often an answer to problems.
