Am thinking of getting this as a walkabout lens for upcoming holiday, it will be mounted on a D300s body, any views?

Equivalent to a 42-200 mm in old money, so limited wide angle ability, and it isn't the best lens Nikon have ever produced in terms of distortion. If the latest G lens is the one you mean, it is pretty sharp, but I believe it still uses a mechanical AF linkage, so focus won't be particularly fast either.
If limitations are ok, then go for it - it isn't too expensive, otherwise, there may be better options depending on your type of photography. For me, the lack of wide angle would be too limiting, but if you are ok with that.....

I think you mean 42-300 mm in 35mm (full frame) terms. As Sooty points out you will lack at the wide angle end on a DX body like the D300s.
The acknowledged DX walk around lens is the 18-200 Nikkor. A reasonable all round performer I believe.
I did indeed mean 300 at the long end!
