Is there such a lens ? ....a camera shop, Digital solutions, in Chester has this lens, or rather it has the box and a printed ticket that states,

NIKKOR 70-300 2.8 VR LENS, USED, PROFESSIONALLY CLEANED INTERNALLY. 6 MONTHS GUARANTEE, 1199.

I went in to make enquiries...this is a lens I would be interested in especially as they do trade-ins.
They obviously did not see me as a potential customer, there were two sales assistants, no customers yet they were very unhelpfull, so much so in fact that I didn't like to ask to see the lens....they told me to look on the internet...I did and can find no mention of this lens.

Have they made a mistake ? ....Is it in fact an overpriced 70-200 ?

    .....Mike

Well it is either an overpriced 70-300 VR and not f/2.8, or it is a 70-200 f/2.8 and whether it is overpriced or not would depend on the condition.

Or it could be a brand new lens that hasn't been launched yet, however, to have the specified characteristics would make it large and heavy, more like the sigma 120-300 than either of the Nikon lenses.

Mind you I do have a set of golf clubs that if I tried to sell you would not be able to find in any catalogue, because of a mistake when ordering and the company representative agreeing to the shaft and head combination I have a bespoke set of Taylor Made irons. Somehow I doubt Nikon build one off lenses and if they did they would end up with the likes of Grays of Westmnster as a curiosity and at a premium price.

Run away, doesn't sound like a good place yo do business anyway.

The Nikon 70-300mm VR's price ( for a new brand new lens) is around 400 depending on where you get it from.
The Nikon 70-200mm VR'S price, again brand new, is around 1600.

Mike I would suspect it's the same as the one you already have.

I would say they have mistakingly put it down as a 70-300 instead of a 70-200 thats if its a f2.8 lens, The 70-300 vr is f3.5-5.6. If its the Nikkor AF-S 70-200 F2.8 G ED VR lens i would hardly call it over priced, these sell for in excess of over a 1,000 on ebay or 1,299 new and are becoming harder to get hold of in top condition as they arnt made anymore , People are clinging onto them , I just bought a spanking new one for 1,000 its a beauty lens i prefer it to the newer 70-200 well worth having in any bag imho Wink

If you bought a brand new one for 1000, then a used one for 1200 is certainly overpriced.....Smile
..For many months I had been trying to sell one in EPZ classified's, in top condition together with a Nikon 1.7 converter for under 1000..no serious interest.

I remember some-one like Sigma making a 70-300 f2.8 - with Nikon fit as an option.
I would stay clear. Anybody selling a legitimate Sigma should know the difference between Nikon and Sigma in Nikon fit.
