I'm posting this for a friend.
He has not bought into any system as of yet and would just like opinions of which model to go for.
The main advantage of the Pentax is it's weatherproof body with seals e.t.c.
I have a D200 so i can only give him a one sided opinion ![]()
Thanks all.
Simon
Both are very good. I would go down to a local camera shop and try them out. Which one feels right in the hands is the one to go for. It could be a mistake to buy any slr without feeling comfortable when holding it or looking through the viewfinder etc.

Quotation from Nikon advertising blurb.
Solid look and feel
The D200 boasts a lightweight, yet durable and robust magnesium alloy body and an advanced sealing system that protects the camera from moisture and dust, making it suitable for a range of rigorous and challenging assignments. The integrated double-bladed shutter, which incorporates a refined mirror balance system, has been tested to well in excess of 100,000 cycles.
Quote: Both are weatherproof and both are good, the Pentax is a bit less expensive and has shake reduction in the body that works, Nikon has more lenses but Pentax also has some very good lenses and will soon release some new ones.

Also the pentax has a huge backwards compatibility with its old lens and a bunch of other ones, apparently.
The pentax is not that bad, it has a really nifty WB preview. It displays a photo you taken and shows the effects of the adjustments. Nice! It's menus, once you get your head around it, is really easy and quick to use.
Nikon has more creative controls. E.g. multiple exposures, adjust spot meaturing size. Its also a 5 fps.
In terms of image quality (lens restricted) the d200 is slightly better, also the noise is better too. The only down side (personal experience), the WB isnt the greatest. But that can be fixed in photoshop in 2 minutes.
The pentax is much better value for money, as you get a lens with the price. But the same lens you get with the k110 and k100. Plus all the new sigma lens coming out (18-200 OS, 50-150 F2.8) they're canon, nikon and sigma fit only. For the time being anyway.
So as lens technology is progessing, Pentax is being left out a bit.
In short, not much different between them. Nikon is slightly better quality and creativity.
Pentax is cheaper and has SR and nifty features. But takes SD!
But with the more nikon lens, flash guns, battery grips etc and high quality sigma and tamaron lens coming out with canon and nikon with first dibs. Nikon sounds more appealing!
The pentax k10 is, for once, a great d-slr (compaired to k110, and k100) they have released since the IST series. That is great value for money and SR which the nikon doesnt have. Without spending a small fortune on a VR lens. But the newest stuff by 3rd parties is fairly limited to canon and nikon.

I use the d200,my friend has the the k10,both have some great features.Pentaxs dust off,and image stablizer, and white balance ajutment are very incentive.you need to go to a shop, and get you hand on both, pentax is a lot lighter, especially with the battry grip on.The nikon is a lot heaver and feels more robust. If cost is the main factor then pentax wins hands down.If not i would go for nikon. But if you just want a good dslr, then let your hands decided, and go for the one that feels right for you.because there both great dslr.
I don' know where this issue of lens compatibility has come from - I can't see any restrictions on availability of Sigma and Tamrons with PAF fitting.
I haven't heard of any significant problem with lens compatibility for Pentax. One of the great strengths, I thought, was how you could use almost all of the earlier KA/KAF mount lenses with the current generation, and even original K mount with the obvious limitations on some functions. Also Pentax lenses are frequently of very high optical quality.
I understood that the K10D is a big improvement on the previous generation (*ist D, etc.) but the difference between the K10D and the K100D/K110D is more to do with specification and target market. They're lower spec because they're aimed at the beginner/amateur market, while the K10D is aimed at the higher end of the market.
Take a look through some of the other forum posts on the K10D, such as this one for example, and you'll find some very high praise for it. It's well worth serious consideration.

(And what's the problem with SD?)
