on iq alone would the nikon d3100 with good glass be a better buy than d5100 with kit lens
On IQ alone NO.
Check the sensor specs, The one fitted to the D5100 is the same as the D7000, The Pentax K-5, Plus several others......![]()
The D3100 has something completely different, Probably to justify its price point in the market place....!!!
Check out the " DXO " Index, This will give you a more technical view on where the two sit, From a sensor evaluation point.....![]()
Good glass is always a consideration.....!!!!!! But and this is the But, Good glass can not give you more image resolution & cleaner high ISO performance....![]()
There are other considerations, But the sensor thing is sumfin you can't change by yourself.....!
thanks for that. looking to replace g10 had a look at csc market but do not want evf [wear bifocals] main camera system is canon but want something to use as fun camera one body one lens bought d80 a few years ago which i still use are csc cameras more prone to dust the way i look it is if spending more than £450 you just have to go for dslr
On a perhaps important detail, following the Thailand floods either model is coming back in stock at many retailers.
The 5100 is the better specified body - at a higher price.
The supersonic wave sensor dust remover on the Panasonic and Olympus CSC are the best out there and its quite rare to get dust problems on these cameras unless you are very careless when changing lenses. Its interesting to note that the Nikon D300S/D90 fitted with a 12mp sensor out performed some of the later 16mp cameras respecially on image quality. Check out the reviews.

I have both the Nikon D5000 & D5100. I saw the D3100 advertised with additional lenses at super (crazy) prices, but still opted to add the D5100 to the D5000 because of the extras loaded into the kit. You can of course use the same lenses so there is no difference there, just consider the camera bodies.
However, reading reviews with professional comparisons, in a photo journal showed the D5100 to be far better in terms of specification, but the D3100 to be better value for money. I suppose you have to decide what you really want - you spends your money you takes your chances as they say.
